Psalter in Church Slavonic. Kathisma 9

What are the Psalms and Kathismas

The Psalter is one of the most widely read books of the Old Testament. It consists of twenty sections approximately equal in volume, which are called kathismas. For ease of reading, the text of the Psalter was divided into kathismas in the fourth century AD. Each section, in turn, contains a certain number of prayer chants - psalms. For example, Kathisma 9 includes six chants. The entire Psalter contains 150 psalms. Also, each kathisma is divided into three parts (articles), between which a doxology is read.

Orthodox worship

In Old Testament times, prayer chants were performed to the accompaniment of a ten-stringed, harp-like musical instrument - the psaltery. From this word comes the name of the collection of psalms. The term "kathisma" has a common root with the word "sitting". This is due to the fact that during divine services the reading of kathismas can be listened to while sitting.

The author of most of the hymns of the Psalter is considered to be the Hebrew king and prophet David, who lived a thousand years before the birth of Christ. However, the composition of some psalms is also attributed to other Old Testament figures, including the prophet Moses and King Solomon. In addition to Christians, the Psalter is also revered by Jews. An analogue of this collection of psalms is also present in Islam. It is believed that the sacred text Zabur was revealed by Allah to the prophet David.

Saint John Chrysostom says:

“so that evil spirits would not spoil everything by introducing depraved songs, God established psalms for protection from them, from which there is both pleasure and benefit” (Complete Collection of Creations. Volume 5).

Spiritual Benefits of Reading Psalms

The canonical books of the Bible, including the Psalms, are often called inspired. That is, these texts were written by God's chosen individuals under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit himself. One cross-cutting theme runs through all the psalms of the Psalter - the relationship between man and the Almighty. However, this topic in the sacred collection is revealed from completely different angles. For example, some psalms are perceived as outbursts of joyful and grateful praise to God. Others are imbued with a deep repentant mood. There are also psalms in the Psalter that are more like historical documents rather than prayers.

So, the Psalter is a real spiritual treasury, containing a variety of forms of communication between man and God. Therefore, the sacred collection of psalms has remained relevant for Christians for thousands of years. The psalms not only help to express what is so difficult to convey in words, but also console and spiritually encourage the person praying. Priest Dimitry Shishkin points out that the Psalter gives precious

“the possibility of the closest and most lively prayerful communication between a person and God. The purpose of this communication is our sanctification and communion with the goodness of God.”

The joy of God-lovers, the silence of the soul, the attraction of angelic help - this is what St. Ephraim the Syrian called the psalm. He also pointed out that prayer chants

“and brings tears from a heart of stone... The psalm is the enlightenment of souls, the sanctification of bodies” (“Creations.” Volume 2).

Those who find it difficult to read the psalms in Church Slavonic can use the Russian translation of the Psalter. St. Ephraim the Syrian called on every Christian:

“Let the psalm be continually in your mouth. The called name of God drives away demons and sanctifies the psalmist” (“Creations”, volume 2).

Servant of God Maria from Sarov says that her son was abandoned by a girl. His mother was afraid that in despair he would commit some irreversible act. On the advice of the priest, Mary began to read the Psalter. At first, the woman did not understand much, but she soon figured it out and thanks to this she began to better understand the divine service. Reading the Psalter brought her comfort. To Mary’s joy, beneficial changes also occurred with her son. He survived the loss and did not become embittered. The guy took the blame for the breakup on himself and made useful conclusions for the future.

Kathisma 9: when read

The Psalter is one of the most ancient liturgical books. It is an integral part of church life. Kathisma 9, for example, is included in the ninth hour of Monday and the first hour of Thursday of Lent. In the fifth week of Great Lent, the ninth kathisma is included in the third hour of Thursday. During Passion Week - Tuesday Matins. The Psalter in Church Slavonic is also used during normal periods of the year. For example, Kathisma 9 is read during Wednesday Vespers.

The Psalms of the ninth kathisma can also be read in cell (home) prayer. The Holy Venerable Arsenios of Cappadocia advised Christians to turn to the Psalter in a variety of life circumstances. In his teachings, the monk also mentioned the psalms of the ninth kathisma. For example, the saint said that Psalm 64 will be useful to those who want to conduct trade safely. Psalm 65 is recommended to be read to maintain peace in the family. Psalm 66 calls for a blessing on livestock.

The 67th Psalm is advised by the Monk Arseny to be read by women who experience repeated miscarriages during childbirth. Psalm 68 must be read for God's protection during floods. The last psalm of kathisma, 69th, should be read to soft-hearted people who are easily discouraged.

What is Kathisma 9 about?

Like the entire Psalter, Kathisma 9 is dedicated to the relationship between the Creator and his main creation - man. In the first psalm of the kathisma, David praises the Almighty for His care for the chosen people. The author calls God the Lord of the earth and seas, expresses devotion to Him and thanks for the rains, thanks to which the people have crops and feed for livestock. In the next psalm, David calls on all nations to express praise to the Most High and notes that God has repeatedly helped the Jews. Even now, when the chosen people are at enmity with other tribes, God does not abandon them, thanks to the fervent prayers of the king.

What follows is a psalm in which David again asks God to pour out His mercies on his people. The Prophet calls the Creator the righteous Judge of all nations. The author acknowledges His power over the entire Universe with admiration and gratitude. In the following song, David expresses the idea that God scatters enemies like smoke. The righteous rejoice. The author again recalls the wonderful protection of the Almighty and calls on everyone to praise Him.

The penultimate psalm contains David's plea for protection from earthly enemies. The author admits that he is tired of unjust persecution and asks God to encourage him. The king expresses his trust in the Almighty and confidence in victory. The last psalm of the ninth kathisma largely repeats the content of the second half of the 39th psalm from the sixth kathisma. We again see David asking God for help. The author calls the Creator the source of salvation and says that His protection will fill the righteous with joy.

Psalter in Church Slavonic: Kathisma 9

Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us. Amen.

Heavenly King. Trisagion. And according to Our Father.

Psalm 64

1 In the end, a psalm of song to David, a song of Jeremiah and Ezekiel, the people of exile, whenever you want to go. 2 Song is due to You, O God, in Zion, and prayer will be given to You in Jerusalem. 3 Hear my prayer, all flesh will come to you. 4 The words of the wicked have prevailed over us, and You have purged our wickedness.

5 Blessed is the one whom You have chosen and accepted, He will dwell in Your courts. Let us be filled with goodness in Thy house, holy is Thy temple, 6 wonders in righteousness. Hear us, O God, to our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth, and of them that are in the sea far off, 7 Who hath prepared the mountains for His strength, girded with strength, 8 Who troubled the depths of the sea, Whoever is at peace with the sound of his waves is it worth it? The nations will be troubled, 9 and those who dwell in the ends will be afraid because of Your signs, You have decorated the outcome of the morning and evening.

10 You have visited the earth and made it drunk, you have multiplied and enriched it. The river of God is filled with water. Thou hast prepared food for them, as such [is] a preparation. 11 Give her reins, multiply her life; in her drops she will rejoice and shine. 12 Bless the crown of the summer of Thy goodness, and Thy fields will be filled with fatness, 13 The red deserts will wilt, and the hills will be girded with joy. 14 When the rams are clothed, and the crops multiply the wheat, they will call, for they will sing.

Psalm 65

1 Finally, the song of the psalm of resurrection. 2 Shout to the Lord, all the earth, sing to His name, give glory to His praise. 3 Say to God: Because Thy works are terrible, in the multitude of Thy powers Thy enemies will lie to Thee. 4 Let all the earth worship You and sing to You, and sing to Your name, O Most High. 5 Come and see the works of God, since he is terrible in the council of men more than the sons of men.

6 Turning the sea into dry land, they will walk in the river with their feet, and there we will rejoice in Him, 7 who rules the world by His power. His eyes gaze upon tongues; let not those who are over-grieved be lifted up within themselves. 8 O Gentiles, bless our God and make a voice of His praise, 9 Who has laid down my soul and has not allowed my feet to be troubled. 10 Because you have tempted us, O God, you have set us on fire as silver is liquified. 11 You brought us into the net, you placed sorrow on our backbone.

12 You have led men upon our heads, you have passed through fire and water, and you have brought them to rest. 13 I will go down to Your house with a burnt offering, I will offer You my prayers, 14 which I have spoken with my mouth, and the words of my mouth in my sorrow, 15 I will offer up burnt offerings to You with incense, and the rams. , I will offer you oxen from the goats. 16 Come, hear, and I will tell you, all you who fear God, that He has created my soul. 17 To Him I cried with my mouth and lifted Him up under my tongue. 18 If I see a lie in my heart, let the Lord not hear me. 19 For this reason God heard me and gave ear to the voice of my prayer. 20 Blessed be God, who has not left my prayer and His mercy from me.

Psalm 66

1 Finally, in songs, a psalm of songs to David. 2 O God, be merciful and blessed; make Your face shine upon us and have mercy on us. 3 Let your way be known on earth; your salvation is on all nations. 4 Let people confess to You, O God, let all people confess to You. 5 Let the nations rejoice and rejoice, for you have judged people with righteousness and set up nations throughout the earth. 6 Let people confess to You, O God, let all people confess to You. 7 The earth has given its fruit, blessed be O God, our God, 8 Blessed be O God, and may all the ends of the earth fear Him.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always, and forever and ever. Amen. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God! (three times, with three bows) . Lord, have mercy (three times) . Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always, and forever and ever. Amen.

Psalm 67

1 Finally, a psalm of songs to David. 2 Let God rise again, and let His enemies be scattered, and let those who hate Him flee from His presence. 3 As smoke disappears, let them disappear, as wax melts before the fire, so let sinners perish from the presence of God, 4 and let the righteous rejoice, let them rejoice before God, let them enjoy themselves with joy. 5 Sing praises to God, sing praises to His name, make a way for him who ascended to the west. Lord is His name, and rejoice before Him. 6 Let them be troubled at His presence, the father of the orphans and the judge of widows: God is in His holy place.

7 God brings like-minded people into the house, destroying those who are bound by courage, and those who live in the tombs who are in great sorrow. 8 O God, You never went before Your people, You never passed by in the wilderness, 9 The earth was shaken, for the heavens were destroyed at the presence of the God of Sinai, at the presence of the God of Israel. 10 The rain is free to separate, O God, from Your inheritance and is exhausted, but You have accomplished it. 11 Thy living creatures live on it; thou hast prepared Thy goodness for the needy, O God. 12 The Lord will give the word to those who bring good news with great power. 13 King of the Powers of the Beloved, through the beauty of the house, divide the self-interest.

14 If you sleep in the middle of the border, the krill of the dove is covered with silver, and its space is in the glitter of gold. 15 At some time the kings of heaven will separate from her, and they will snow in Selmon. 16 Mountain of God, fat mountain, damp mountain, fat mountain. 17 Do you hate the damp mountains? The mountain where God was pleased to live, for the Lord will dwell until the end. 18 The chariot of God is in the darkness, thousands of gob-hungers, the Lord is in them in Sinai in the holy place. 19 Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast taken captivity captive, thou hast received gifts among men, for those who do not repent cannot yet dwell. 20 Blessed be the Lord God, blessed be the Lord day by day; God will hasten for us our salvation. 21 Our God, the God of salvation, and the Lord, the Lord of the outcome of death. 22 Otherwise, God will crush the heads of His enemies, the top of the powers of those who perish in their sins.

23 The Lord says: I will turn from Bashan, I will turn in the depths of the sea. 24 For let your foot be dipped in blood, let your tongue be your dog, from the enemy from him. 25 Thy processions, O God, were seen, the processions of my God the King who is in the holy place, 26 leading the princes near the singers, in the midst of the tympanum virgins. 27 In the churches bless God, the Lord from the sources of Israel. 28 There the youngest Benjamin was in terror, the princes of Judah their rulers, the princes of Zebulun, the princes of Naphtali. 29 Commandment, O God, strengthen by Thy power, O God, this which Thou hast done in us. 30 From your temple in Jerusalem the king will bring you gifts. 31 Forbid the beasts of reeds, the host of youths among the youths of men, even if they shut up the tempted ones with money, scatter the tongues of those who want to fight. 32 Women of prayer will come from Egypt; Ethiopia will bring forward her hand to God.

33 Kingdoms of the earth, sing praises to God, sing praises to the Lord, 34 He who ascended into heaven, the heavens in the east, will give to his voice the voice of power. 35 Give the glory of God, His commandment is upon Israel, and His power upon the clouds. 36 God is marvelous in His saints, the God of Israel: He will give strength and dominion to His people, blessed be God.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always, and forever and ever. Amen. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God! (three times, with three bows). Lord, have mercy (three times). Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always, and forever and ever. Amen.

Psalm 68

1 Finally, about those who have changed, a psalm to David. 2 Save me, O God, for you brought water down to my soul. 3 The coal-burner is in depth, and there is no permanence. I came to the depths of the sea, and the storm drowned me. 4 My cry has become weary, my throat has become silent, my eyes have disappeared from my hope in my God. 5 They that hate me have multiplied more than the hair of my head; they have become stronger in my enemies, those who cast me out unjustly: although I did not delight, then I was rewarded. 6 O God, You have taken away my foolishness, and my sins have not been hidden from You. 7 Let not those who suffer for me be ashamed of You, O Lord, Lord of Hosts; let not those who seek You, O God of Israel, be ashamed for me. 8 Because for Your sake I have endured reproach; You have covered my face with shame.

9 I was a stranger to my brethren, and strange to my son’s mother. 10 For zeal for Your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach You have attacked me. 11 And I covered my soul with fasting, and it became a reproach to me, 12 and I put my garment on sackcloth, and became a parable to them. 13 Those who sit in the gates mock me, and those who drink wine mock me. 14 But my prayer is to You, O God, time of favor, O God, in the abundance of Your mercy, hear me, in the truth of Your salvation. 15 Save me from the clay, that I may not sink, that I may be delivered from those who hate me, and from the deep waters. 16 Let not a storm of water drown me, let the depth below devour me, let a peer speak of me with his mouth. 17 Hear me, O Lord, for Thy mercy is good; according to the multitude of Thy compassions look upon me. 18 Do not turn Your face away from Your servant, for I am in sorrow; hear me quickly.

19 Take my soul, and deliver me, my enemy, for the sake of deliver me. 20 For thou weighest my reproach, and my sorrow, and my shame: before thee are all those who insult me. 21 My soul has longed for reproach, and I have longed and waited for the afflicted, and have not received, and have not found comforters, and have not found. 22 And you gave me gall for my food, and gave me drink for my thirst. 23 Let their table be a snare before them, and a reward, and a temptation. 24 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see, and let their backs be cut off. 25 Pour out Thy wrath upon me, and let the fury of Thy wrath come upon them. 26 Let their court be desolate, and let there be no living thing in their dwellings. 27 Thou hast smote him, and thou hast driven thee away, and thou hast added to my disease my wounds. 28 Add iniquity to their iniquity, and let them not enter into Your righteousness.

29 Let them be consumed of the book of the living, and let them not be written with the righteous. 30 I am poor and sick: let Thy salvation, O God, receive me. 31 I will praise the name of my God with a song, I will magnify Him in praise: 32 And God will be more pleasing than a young calf, wearing horns and claws. 33 Let the poor see and be glad: seek God, and your soul will live. 34 For when the poor Lord hears, He does not despise His own chains. 35 Let the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that live in it, praise Him. 36 For God will save Zion, and the cities of Judah will be built, and they will inhabit it, and they will inherit it, 37 and the seed of Your servants will remain there, and those who love Your name will dwell in it.

Psalm 69

1 Finally, for David as a memorial, so that the Lord could save me. 2 God, attend to my help, Lord, seek my help. 3 Let those who seek my life be ashamed and put to shame; let those who wish evil against me turn back and be ashamed. 4 Let the abies return, ashamed, saying to us: good, good. 5 Let all who seek You, O God, rejoice and rejoice in You, and let them say, “May the Lord be exalted, they who love Your salvation: 6 But I am poor and needy, God, help me: My Helper and God.” my beau, you, Lord, are not become rigid.

Amen.
