The St. Basil the Great Gymnasium is the leading Orthodox gymnasium in Russia. The problem of the development of religious education and upbringing is an urgent problem in modern pedagogy.
In pre-revolutionary Russia, the spiritual development of the people was entrusted to the church. The parochial school became the main source of knowledge for peasants. This article is devoted to the analysis of policy in the field of formation of the system of parochial schools and literacy schools. The article examines the position of the state and church in organizing a public school. Particular attention is paid to studying the methods of teaching the Law of God. During the analysis of archival data, an attempt was made to characterize the process of educating the peasant population on the territory of the Lipetsk district of the Tambov province. The author has made an attempt to study the basic methods of teaching in schools and to acquaint readers with the main directions of educational policy of that time. The study of historical experience, positive and negative aspects in the religious education of pre-revolutionary Russia, makes it possible to study the situation with public education in more detail. The parochial school became the most popular among the peasants. We are seeing an increase in interest in this type of school from the state and the peasant population. The teaching of the Law of God, the catechism and the New and Old Testaments had the goal of instilling religiosity and morality, love for one’s Fatherland and respect for the king. The method of teaching the Law of God had a number of disadvantages. The most important thing was the discrepancy between the data presented in religious literature and scientific knowledge. Church schools of pre-revolutionary Russia in the system of education of peasant youth (on the example of Lipetsk district Tambov gubernia).
The problem of the development of religious education is an actual problem of modern pedagogy.
In pre-revolutionary Russia, the spiritual development of the people was entrusted to the Church. The main sources of knowledge for farmers was the parish school. This article is devoted to analysis of the legislated policy of formation of the system of parochial schools and schools of education. This article examines the position of the state and the Church in the organization of public schools. Special attention is paid to study methods of teaching the law of God. On the analysis of archival data, an attempt was made to characterize the learning process of the peasant population in the territory of the Lipetsk district, Tambov province. The author attempts to explore the basic teaching methods in schools, to acquaint readers with the main directions of educational policy of the time.
The study of historical experience, the positive and negative aspects of a religious upbringing in pre-revolutionary Russia, as well as concentrating attention on a particular region allows to study the situation with public education in detail.
In the study the following conclusions were obtained. Parochial school became the most popular among the peasants. We can see the increased interest in this type of schools from the state and the peasant population. The teaching of the Law of God, catechism and the New and Old Testament had a purpose to bring religion and morality, love for the Fatherland and respect for the monarch. Methods of teaching God's Law had several drawbacks. The most important thing was that the data presented in religious literature did not correspond to the scientific knowledge.
