A beneficent man, born into a respectable family known for great achievements - this is the meaning of the name Stanislav. The second version of the translation is more popular; it predicts celebrity and fame for the owner due to his own achievements.

Origin of the name

The Old Slavonic word came about by combining two bases: “stan”, a designation of strength, fortress and “glory”, which speaks of the fame of the owner.

It is interpreted differently, but the essence remains the same: to become famous, to establish glory, to exalt one’s state.

According to the Slavists, it has Polish origins - the first mention was found in a manuscript of the 11th century. By the 14th-16th centuries, the peak of popularity was observed in Belarus and western Ukraine.

In documents from the late Middle Ages, linguists have discovered about 1,500 individuals named after the Catholic martyr Stanislav of Krakow, born in 1030. In Russia, widespread distribution was noticed later, at the beginning of the 19th century.

Interview with Fr. Krzysztof Pozharski, rector of the parish of St. Stanislav in St. Petersburg

First of all, I would like to ask you about the preparations for the celebrations dedicated to the 1050th anniversary of the baptism of Poland. You initiated the fact that this memorable event also affected Polonia in our city, and took on most of the organizational preparations. When did you first come up with this idea?

The idea of organizing celebrations in honor of the 1050th anniversary of the baptism of Poland came to me about six months ago. Both in Poland and abroad, Catholic parishes were preparing for these celebrations. As in tsarist times, today there are several thousand Catholic Poles in St. Petersburg, many of whom actively participate in the life of the Church. In this regard, the idea of holding anniversary celebrations in the Northern Capital arose. It was important for me that someone from the representatives of the Polish Catholic Church take part in them, therefore, with the permission of our Archbishop Pavel Pezzi, I decided to invite the Polish Metropolitan, Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz, thanks to whom our celebrations acquired special significance. The visit of such a distinguished person certainly gave all residents of St. Petersburg who are of Polish origin the opportunity to hear, see, and feel that Polish Catholics really celebrate this date. I really wanted the celebrations to awaken religious and national self-awareness in the parishioners, so all these six months we have been preparing for them in close cooperation with the Consulate General of Poland in the city on the Neva.

And the cooperation with the Museum of the History of Religion, with the Hermitage - did it also take place on your initiative?

The implementation of all the ideas I had, of course, became possible thanks to cooperation with the Consulate, museums, and the parish of St. Stanislaus and the Basilica of St. Catherine. It is physically impossible to organize a celebration of this scale alone. As for the State Museum of the History of Religion, one of our parishioners works there. Together with the management of the museum, we managed to organize a conference about Catholics in St. Petersburg, and this was also a very important part of the celebrations, because this museum contains many exhibits from Polish churches, some of which can already be seen, and some are patiently waiting in the wings. Here we should remember that the Museum of the History of Religion is the heir of the Leningrad Museum of Atheism, therefore all religious works of art that came to the museum in the 30s were stored in boxes without any special care, and only now they are gradually being brought to light , are being restored so that they can become part of the exhibition. For example, I recently learned that the museum’s collection contains two paintings by Francis Smuglevich - few people know that they are in St. Petersburg.

Like the painting by Smuglevich that we saw in the Hermitage - after all, before the revolution it hung above the altar in the parish of St. Stanislav, only then I ended up not in the Museum of Atheism, but in the Hermitage...

This painting by Francis Smuglewicz, painted in 1785, was originally located in the Cathedral of St. Stanislaus in Vilnius. In 1825 it was transferred to the Church of St. Stanislaus in St. Petersburg, where it remained until 1935. When the parish was closed, the painting was immediately taken away by Hermitage workers, and there it was stored, rolled up, like the work of an unknown artist. Only in the 70s it was established that this painting belongs to the brush of Smuglevich. When the building was returned to the Catholic parish, we made a lot of efforts to return the painting to its historical place, but our efforts were not crowned with success. Therefore, now, preparing for the anniversary celebrations, I asked the director of the Hermitage to organize a grand opening of this painting. And although it still needs restoration, Mikhail Piotrovsky met us halfway, so our delegation was able to take part in the opening of this canvas, which took place in the Restoration and Storage Center.

And that altar image that hangs in the church of St. Stanislav at the present time - what is his story?

It was painted specifically for our parish when it became clear that Smuglevich’s painting could not be returned. But, as they say, everything that is done is for the better. Firstly, in Smuglevich’s painting we see King Boleslav in the center of the picture, and the artist placed the figure of Bishop Stanislav a little to the right - in front of such a saint it would not be very convenient to pray. Secondly, the painting is a museum exhibit, which means it requires special climatic conditions and additional security, the organization of which would be very difficult for us. Therefore, in 1998, another painting was painted depicting St. Stanislaus during his last mass in the Skalka Church in Krakow, through the window of which the king and his army are visible, planning to take revenge on the bishop. Initially, a slightly different idea was considered: King Boleslav raises a sword over Saint Stanislav during mass - this is exactly the image that now hangs in the cathedral in Vilnius. But this plot seemed cruel to us, which could make it difficult to concentrate on prayer.

At the opening of the film, you said that the story of St. Stanislaus was significant for the Polish Church, since it shows that representatives of church authorities can and should resist state power if they do not agree with its actions. It seems to me that this is especially interesting in the context of the history of the Polish people in the 19th century, when, in fact, the parish of St. Stanislav in St. Petersburg.

Yes, this historical moment - the murder of Bishop Stanislav, who opposed the will of the king - influenced the religious culture of Poland as a whole. He shows that clergy have the right to instruct government authorities, to remind its representatives of the importance of God’s laws, even if it costs them their lives. Over the thousand-year history of the Polish Church, this has happened more than once: another example is Bishop Zygmunt of Felinsky, who was condemned to exile to Russia for resisting the tsarist government. I hope that the Hermitage management will one day be able to collect paintings by Polish artists in one place and open a Polish hall in which Smuglevich’s painting will take its rightful place. Then it could prompt millions of visitors to the Hermitage to think quite seriously...

Was the parish of St. Stanislaus originally called the “Polish” parish? Or did this definition appear later, due to the large number of Polish parishioners?

It is difficult to talk specifically about “Polish” parishes in St. Petersburg: there have always been many Catholics of different nationalities here - more than in other Russian cities. In addition, in the 19th century, Mass was celebrated in Latin. But sermons and some prayers were read in the native languages of the parishioners, not only in Polish, but also in French, German, and Lithuanian. Gradually, parishioners of the same nationality united around one church: at the beginning of the 20th century, the French Church of Our Lady of Lourdes appeared, today known as the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes; The Germans were united by the wooden church of St. Boniface. But the Latvians and Lithuanians did not build “their” churches; they met in different parishes. In 1917, there were 7,200 parishioners in the Church of St. Stanislaus, and the schedule of services was as follows: a mass was celebrated in Latin, after which there was a sermon - in Polish, Lithuanian or Latvian, then there was another mass, and then a joint prayer - in national languages languages. And now the order is approximately the same: the main language in our parishes is Russian, but sometimes Masses are celebrated in other languages, and in our parish the second language is Polish.

And as a community of the parish of St. Did Stanisława and Polonia generally react to the celebrations of the 1050th anniversary of the Baptism of Poland? Did you manage to awaken in them the feeling that you spoke about at the beginning?

I can’t say that “Polonia” in St. Petersburg actively took part in all events - after all, there were only a few of us at services and exhibitions. But it seems to me that in the future this may be important for all residents of St. Petersburg with Polish roots, whose number reaches several thousand. This reminded them that they too belong to the Polish people and to the Catholic Church. Very few people in Russia pay attention to this, so the cooperation of the Catholic community with various Polish organizations is of very special importance.

Thank you for the interview!

Stanislav was the son of a Polish nobleman, the long-awaited first-born, whom his father, according to his vow, prepared from childhood to serve God. Stanisław became a priest and canon in the Cathedral of Krakow, became famous as a preacher and was elected local bishop in 1072.

The capital of Poland was then located in Gniezno, and when the Polish king Boleslaw II stained himself with the rape of a noblewoman, the Archbishop of Gniezno should have condemned the king. But everyone remained silent, except Stanislav. When one day the king came to the cathedral where the bishop was serving, the prayers were immediately stopped. The angry king first sent servants to kill the obstinate man, but when they refused, he hacked him to death himself. This version of events is presented by the Catholic Church and is not historically accurate. Presumably, Bishop Stanislav was one of the initiators of the uprising of the magnates, for which he was executed by the king [ source not specified 1651 days
