Psalm 33

Psalm to David, ever change your face before Abimelech, and let him go, and go away

Psalm of David; when he changed his countenance before Abimelech, and he let him go, and he departed.

1 I will bless the Lord at all times; I will make His praise in my mouth. 1 I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise will always be on my lips.
2 My soul will glory in the Lord, that the meek may hear and be glad. 2 My soul shall glory in the Lord, that the meek may hear and be glad.
3 Magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. 3 Exalt the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together.
4 I sought the Lord and heard me, and delivered me from all my troubles. 4 I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my troubles.
5 Come to Him and be enlightened, and your faces will not be ashamed. 5 Come to Him and be enlightened, and your faces will not be ashamed.
6 This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard and saved him from all his troubles. 6 This beggar cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him from all his troubles.
7 The angel of the Lord will encamp around those who fear Him, and will deliver them. 7 The angel of the Lord will encamp around those who fear Him and will deliver them.
8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Nan. 8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him.
9 Fear the Lord, all your saints, for there is no hardship for those who fear Him. 9 Fear the Lord, all you His saints, for those who fear Him have no shortage.
10 With riches they become poor and hungry, but those who seek the Lord will not be deprived of any good thing. 10 The rich became poor and hungry, but those who seek the Lord will not lack any good thing.
11 Come, children, listen to me, I will teach you the fear of the Lord. 11 Come, children, listen to me, I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 Who is a man, even though he loves the days and sees good things? 12 Who is the man who wants to live, who wants to see good days?
13 Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from uttering flattery. 13 Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from deceitful speech.
14 Turn away from evil and do good. Seek peace, and get married, and... 14 Turn away from evil and do good, seek peace and strive towards it:
15 The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and His ears are attentive to their prayer. 15 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayer;
16 But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to consume their remembrance from the earth. 16 But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to destroy the memory of them from the earth.
17 The righteous cried, and the Lord heard them, and delivered them from all their troubles. 17 The righteous cried, and the Lord heard them, and delivered them from all their troubles.
18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and will save the humble in spirit. 18 The Lord is close to those who are broken in heart and will save those who are humble in spirit.
19 Many are the tribulations of the righteous, and the Lord will deliver me from them all. 19 Many are the sorrows of the righteous, and the Lord will deliver them from all of them.
20 The Lord guards all their bones; not one of them will be broken. 20 The Lord guards all their bones; not one of them will be broken.
21 The death of sinners is cruel, and those who hate the righteous will sin. 21 The death of sinners is evil, and those who hate the righteous will sin.
22 The Lord will redeem the souls of His servant, and all who trust in Him will not sin. 22 The Lord will redeem the souls of His servants, and all who trust in Him will not sin.
Glory: Glory:

I will bless the Lord at all times; I will make His praise in my mouth. My soul will glory in the Lord, that the meek may hear and rejoice. Magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt His name together. Seek the Lord and hear me, and deliver me from all my sorrows. Come to Him and be enlightened, and your faces will not be ashamed. This beggar cried out, and the Lord heard and saved him from all his sorrows. The Angel of the Lord will encamp around those who fear Him and deliver them. Taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Nan. Fear the Lord, all your saints, for there is no hardship for those who fear Him. Those who are poor and hungry are rich, but those who seek the Lord will not be deprived of any good. Come, children, listen to me, I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Who is a person who loves life and sees good things? Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking flattery. Avoid evil and do good. Seek peace, and get married, and... The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and His ears are upon their prayer. The face of the Lord, against those who do evil, will consume their memory from the earth. The righteous cried out, and the Lord heard them, and delivered them from all their sorrows. The Lord is near to those who are broken in heart, and will save those who are humble in spirit. Many are the sorrows of the righteous, and the Lord will deliver me from all of them. The Lord protects all their bones; not one of them will be broken. The death of sinners is cruel, and those who hate the righteous will sin. The Lord will deliver the souls of His servant, and all who trust in Him will not sin.

Glory:

33:1–5 Psalm of David, when he feigned madness before Abimelech and was driven away from him and withdrew. 2 I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise is continually in my mouth. 3 My soul will glory in the Lord; The meek will hear and rejoice. 4 Magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. 5 I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my dangers.

An interesting point: David deceived Achish by pretending to be insane, and as if nothing had happened, he continues to praise the Lord, sincerely believing that he sought the Lord and He heard David, and delivered the king from all dangers (presumably, from the wrath of Achish as well).

And the most interesting thing is that David boasted in the Lord even in this case. That is, of course, praising oneself for intelligence and for everything good is bragging and a bad quality, a manifestation of pride (Rom. 1:30), but to consider that God prompted David to pretend to be crazy seems strange too. Most likely, the spiritual state of the society in which David lived was so deplorable (polygamy, temple prostitution, mass riots, palace intrigue, etc.) that against its background, David’s act of madness seemed a harmless trifle.

One thing can be understood: David, pretending to be crazy, sincerely believed that he was doing the right thing and that since he had passed this number, it meant that God was helping him. But whether this was actually the case is unknown.

33:6,7 Those who turned their gaze to Him were enlightened, and their faces would not be ashamed. 7 This beggar cried, and the Lord heard and saved him from all his troubles.

Only those who turn to Him can be enlightened by God - receive from Him knowledge about what to do and how to live in order to please God.

He who does not convert will not be able to be enlightened by Him.

33:8 The Angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him and delivers them.

Information about the Angel of the Lord, who delivers the servants of God from... it is not said what. Therefore, those who read this place often believe that here we are talking about a personal guardian angel for every inhabitant of the earth, who saves them from all sorts of troubles.

However, not every inhabitant of the earth falls into the category of “those who fear the Lord” - this time. Two - it is further said that angels help only those who are needed by God (Heb. 1:14). And three - the Bible contains examples of helping God's servants when they were on Jehovah's assignment (Acts 27:23).

But even while in God's service, Paul, for example, was not spared much (2 Cor. 11:24-28). And those whom the whole world was not worthy of died and for some reason their guardian angels did not protect them from troubles and mortal dangers (Heb. 11:36-39) Therefore, it would be wrong to use this text to explain the idea of the presence of angels - keepers.

33:9 Taste and see how good the Lord is! Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

If you don’t taste an apple, then it’s impossible to know how tasty it is. Likewise, the good things of the Lord cannot be known until one has tasted the path of life offered by HIM. And it is possible to taste this path only by APPLYING all His principles in your life.

33:10,11 Fear the Lord, ye His saints, for there is no want among those who fear Him. 11 The people of Skim are poor and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

The call to “Fear the Lord!” - does not in the least humiliate human dignity and does not in the least make the Lord a tyrant. A healthy fear of falling into the abyss will keep you from going close to the edge of the cliff. Likewise, the fear of being unnecessary to God because of depravity will help us in many cases not to come close to those situations in which our vices bloom like roses.

If you use common sense in life, you can avoid many troubles and experience the goodness of God's way of life, even if you are neither strong nor dexterous. A lion is a strong and agile animal, and sometimes it suffers from hunger. But to those who fear the Lord, this will never happen.

33:12,13 Come, children, listen to me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord. 13 Does a person want to live and does he love long life in order to see good?

It’s interesting, but only
children are invited by God in order to teach them the fear of God (it has already been said that the fear of GOD and fearing the Lord are different concepts: the fear of God is the totality of His internal qualities that provide Him with stability Himself to be in the TRUTH)
So, , if people learn the fear of God - form internal convictions of the Almighty - these convictions will help them to remain stably in the truth of God. But why are CHILDREN invited to teach the fear of God? Because the race of “children” is a race of students who want to learn everything and do not consider themselves omniscient teachers: it is no longer possible to teach a teacher anything.

However, even from the race of “children” - it is not possible to teach the fear of God to everyone: for only those who LOVE LIFE (as the psalmist says) and WANT to live a very long time - they will be able to comprehend the teaching about the fear of God, understanding that its application in life and can ensure longevity. It is impossible to force someone who takes it lightly or does not believe it to follow the path of eternal life. So, what should “children” learn about the fear of the Lord? We learn from the following reflections of David.

33:14,15 Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from deceitful words. 15 Avoid evil and do good; seek peace and follow it.

So, what should “children” learn about the fear of the Lord? To be able to handle your language, for example.

The tongue sparks evil and insidious speech. And whoever has an evil tongue has an evil heart, for speech comes from the heart. But the wicked cannot be God’s children, therefore it is impossible to teach them the fear of God.

Children of God must also not do evil, for to speak is, of course, bad in itself, but to do means to oppose God’s regulations. And opponents will never learn the fear of God. But for God's servant it is NOT ENOUGH to simply NOT do evil. You need to DO GOOD. There is a saying: empty hands will always find work, and if they do not do good, they will certainly begin to do evil. The fear of God also includes the ability to maintain peaceful relations with everyone, but they simply and automatically do not improve. Strive for peace - says the psalmist, do everything on your own - to maintain peace, without effort - and peaceful relations will not develop.

33:16,17 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry. 17 But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to destroy the memory of them from the earth.

God sees everyone from the heights of heaven, but pays His attention only to the righteous and their prayers in order to help them. Doers of evil are noticed by God solely in order for Him to know about whom even the memory should be destroyed from the earth.

33:18,19 [The righteous] cry, and the Lord hears, and delivers them from all their sorrows. 19 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and will save those who are humble in spirit.

In a literal sense, God may not deliver the righteous from sorrowful circumstances, just as, for example, the thorn in Paul’s flesh was not removed from him, although Paul begged for help. However, the contrite-hearted righteous have the advantage that even under unchanging sorrowful circumstances, God helps him change his ATTITUDE towards them and endure all difficulties with the firm hope of speedy relief. In addition, the humility of the spirit of the righteous helps them to accept God's saving advice from His word, and therefore they also have the opportunity to overcome many difficulties.

33: 2
0.21 Many are the sorrows of the righteous, and the Lord will deliver him from them all.
21 He keeps all his bones; not one of them will be crushed. Here it is clarified that true deliverance from the many sorrows of the righteous will occur in the future, not in this century. Well, a prophecy for the preservation of the integrity of the bones of Jesus - here the psalmist uttered between words. If you are not attentive to what God’s servants say, you can also miss the prophecies expressed between the lines with other narrative information.

33:22,23 Evil will kill the sinner, and those who hate the righteous will perish. 23 The Lord will redeem the soul of His servants, and none of those who trust in Him will perish.

The sinner will not need to be specially taken to the “wall to be shot”: the evil that he does during his life will be the “shooting” for him. God, seeing through the evil deeds and evil heart of the wicked, will no longer release him into His light - where there is a place only for the righteous who trust in God.

The text of Psalm 33 in the Orthodox Psalter is preceded by the following unusual inscription: “A Psalm of David, when he pretended to be mad before Abimelech and was driven away from him and withdrew.” Such a preface immediately suggests that this song was written on the basis of some historical event. Abimelech is not a name, but a title of the Philistine king, whose name was Achish. It is known that David, as the conqueror of Goliath, was presented to Achish, and in order to get rid of the obsessive attention of the Philistine ruler, he was forced to pretend to be crazy.

The interpretation of Psalm 33 explains the words “Come, children” (Ps. 33:12) in this way: having run away from Abimelech and finding himself on the street, David was surrounded by a crowd of children, but in order not to disturb his image of a madman, he was forced to continue the game, for which the children ridiculed him cruelly. Already being a king, David greatly regretted this incident, because, in his opinion, he had lowered himself in the eyes of the younger generation, and the words “Come, children, I will teach you the fear of the Lord” indicate that he is ready to correct the mistake. Reading, listening and watching Psalm 33 online is recommended for protection from attacking enemies.
