Saint Alexander of Svirsky was a unique person during his lifetime. Before him, as before Saint Abraham, the Almighty descended in three forms. His miraculous abilities are still talked about today; there are undeniable facts of healing people suffering from incurable diseases. And the elder’s life itself was full of difficulties and difficult trials.

He never gave up, constantly prayed and sincerely believed in God’s kindness and grace, worked hard and during his life managed to pass on his faith and knowledge to his students, who left many reliable writings about him.

Life of Alexander Svirsky

Saint Alexander was born into a Russian family, where church vows and rules were honored. From childhood he was brought up in strict obedience to God. After completing his studies, Amos’s parents (as he was called in the family) decided to find him a worthy bride and future wife.

But for the young man, this was not the main goal in life; even then he showed persistence and perseverance in solitude and reading prayers. Therefore, he decided to go to serve God in a monastery without telling his parents about it. Along the way, angels appeared to him, through whose lips the blessing of the Lord was conveyed, the location of the future monastery was indicated and a meeting was granted with a companion who took him to his destination.

The Monk Alexander of Svirsky became a monk at the age of 26 and spent a full 13 years in the monastery in humble prayers. He was ready to fulfill what was destined for him from Above. Away from people, on the shore of Lake Roshchinskoye, in a dense, dense forest, he built a very modest dwelling and lived there for 7 years, working hard, turning to the Almighty with daily prayers and subsisting on very modest food obtained in the forest.

One day the face of the Trinity appeared before the saint, who indicated the place for the construction of the future Church of the Holy Trinity. In 1508 he became a priest and was elevated to the position of abbot, but at heart he remained a modest monk. Without ceasing to work hard, after a short time the temple grew, new structures were erected, and people learned more about it.

Shortly before his death, the Monk Alexander opened a monastery made of stone in honor of the Most Holy Theotokos Virgin Mary. In 1533, the elder passed away and after 14 years he was elevated to the ranks of saints.

Spiritual ascent

The monk was famous for his humble life. Only at the insistence of the brethren did he accept the priesthood and become abbot. He wore rags and didn’t even use a mattress to rest at night, falling asleep on the bare floor. There is a known case when the steward asked him to send one of the monks for firewood, the monk went himself.

Already in his declining years, the monk decided to build a temple in the name of the Intercession of the Virgin Mary. One evening after the akathist the monk was resting with his cell attendant. Suddenly the cell was illuminated by light, and a vision of the Most Pure Virgin with the Child in her arms appeared. She blessed the good deed conceived by the monk.

Anticipating his death, the righteous man ordered his disciples to tie the body with a rope and drag it into the swamp, where they trampled it underfoot. The brothers, of course, refused. Then the saint bequeathed to bury him near the Church of the Transfiguration.

Monastery of Alexander Svirsky

The currently operating monastery is located at a distance of 260 km from St. Petersburg. During its existence, it experienced a lot: fires, destruction, execution of employees, devastation and the loss for some time of the holy relics of St. Alexander. Work is currently underway to restore and open a new monastery.

Famous people of that time helped to build the temples, and they provided significant donations for materials and work. On the territory of the monastery there is a Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God, where you can pray in front of the icon and ask the intercessor of all humanity for healing, remission of sins and protection from disease. The Transfiguration Cathedral is made of beautiful stone and furnished with a miraculous image of its founder.

How to get there from St. Petersburg

You can get to the monastery by personal transport by moving along the Murmansk highway (M-18) to Lodeynoye Pole, then along the bridge over the Svir until the turn to the monastery (the sign is located at the 249th kilometer). After another five kilometers there will be the village of Saraya Sloboda (Svirskoye), where the monastery is located.
  2. By rail. By train from St. Petersburg from Ladozhsky station to Lodeynoye Pole (travel time approximately 4 hours). Check the departure time at the information desk. From the Lodeynoye Pole railway station you can get to the monastery by taxi or by shuttle bus No. 863 or 963.

The relics of the monk

After his death, the saint's body was buried on the territory of his monastery. And his relics, after many years of observation, began to flow myrrh, that is, to release a lot of fragrant precious oil, which proves his holiness.

Many parishioners could observe this action with their own eyes, and the entire temple was filled with a pleasant aroma. The amount of oil released depends on many factors: the presence of believers nearby or onlookers who came just to look at this miracle, the holding of divine services and much more.

The flow of myrrh is so abundant that it is impossible not to notice it; cases have been recorded when bees flocked to the temple in response to the persistent, intoxicating smell. The oil is most secreted on the feet and the exposed part of the arm. For 483 years, his body and clothes remained incorruptible.

Believers from many countries, having heard about the miraculous power of the saint, are asking one very important question: where are the relics of Alexander Svirsky. After long journeys from one place to another, the relics have now found peace on the territory of the monastery they created with their own hands. Many parishioners can pray and ask for healing of the soul from suffering and illness.

The meaning of the divine image

This face depicts an old man with a wise look and outstretched hands to God for all of us. In 1918, the relics of the Saint were taken away by the Bolsheviks. But according to historical records, one museum worker hid them from destruction. It was not until 1998 that they could be seen again for worship.

Many scientists have repeatedly taken particles of the Wonderworker’s relics for research, but none of them can explain this phenomenon. The relics have been preserved in perfect condition and at the most significant moments they begin to flow myrrh. Bees often flock to this smell.

And here is the prayer itself to the saint:

O sacred head, earthly angel and heavenly man, venerable and God-bearing Father Alexandra, great servant of the Most Holy and Consubstantial Trinity, show many mercies to those living in your holy monastery and to all who flow to you with faith and love. Ask us everything that is useful for this temporary life, and even more necessary for our eternal salvation. Help with your intercession, servant of God, the ruler of our country, Russia. And may the holy Orthodox Church of Christ abide deeply in the world. Be to all of us, miracle-working saint, a quick helper in every sorrow and situation. Most of all, at the hour of our death, the merciful intercessor appears to us, so that we may not be betrayed in the ordeals of the air by the power of the evil ruler of the world, but may we be honored with a stumbling-free ascension into the Kingdom of Heaven. Hey, Father, our dear prayer book! Do not disgrace our hope, do not despise our humble prayers, but always intercede for us before the Throne of the Life-Giving Trinity, so that together with you and with all the saints, even if we are unworthy, we may be worthy to glorify in the villages of paradise the greatness, grace and mercy of the One God in the Trinity, Father and Son and Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

The Lord is always with you!

Youth

By the time he came of age, Amos’ ascetic aspirations had strengthened.
He firmly decided to devote his life to God as a monk, although his relatives urged him to think about starting a family. Several monks of the Valaam monastery then lived near his village. The young man often came to them and listened with interest to stories about the lives of their associates, who strived for self-improvement to get closer to Christian ideals. Inspired by communication with the elders, a young man at the age of 19, for fear of angering his relatives, secretly went to Valaam, since ancient times called “Northern Athos”. According to legend, the savior sent him his angel in the guise of a kind fellow traveler who knew the way to the monastery. Then the young man lived in the monastery for about seven years as a novice, spending the day in labor, and at night in prayer vigil.

When the parents found out about the whereabouts of their son, the father went a long way to try to persuade him to return home. The novice did not want to contradict his father, but he did not intend to change his desire to devote himself to serving the Almighty. Therefore, he offered him Solomon’s decision - to also take monastic vows. The relatives did just that - they took monastic vows.

Childhood

The future celestial figure of Russian holiness was born on June 15, 1448 in the village of Mandera, located in the Novgorod region near the Oyat river, on the other bank opposite the Vvedeno-Oyat monastery (now Leningrad region). The parents, poor but pious peasants Stefan and Vassa, already had two adult children (according to another version, they were childless for a long time) and asked the Almighty son as a consolation in their old age. They presumably belonged to the Finno-Ugric Vepsian people. God heard their prayers and one night announced that he would give them a son, and he would become a joy not only for them, but also for the church.

In the world, the future prophet and wonderworker Alexander Svirsky was called Amos

The boy's relatives gave him a Christian upbringing and a name in honor of the biblical prophet Amos. He grew up an obedient, kind and God-fearing child. As a teenager he was sent to learn to read and write. At first, he was not distinguished by high abilities in science, lagged behind his peers and often prayed to the Lord for help. But over time, he was able to catch up and even surpass others in studying all subjects. He also began to attend church daily and show abstinence unusual for his age - he slept and ate little, and avoided noisy games.

Childhood and adolescence of the future saint

In the Ladoga village of Mandera lived a rather middle-aged married couple, Stefan and Vasilisa. They raised two sons and asked God for a youngest child, comfort and not old age. In one of the prayers, they both heard a voice saying that their prayers had been heard, the Creator would give a good marriage a child who would glorify the Church of Christ.

In June, on the 15th, 1448, Vasilisa gave birth to a son, who was named after one of the Old Testament prophets Amos, for the boy appeared on the day of veneration of Amos. Surprisingly, the middle of the 15th century, a far abandoned village, the beginning of the Christian era in Rus', and the villagers know about the Old Testament and its heroes. If we take into account that at that time ordinary people were mostly illiterate, then we can conclude that the parents of the future saint of Russia were church-going believers, drawing knowledge from sermons at services.

On a note! Born into a deeply religious family, Amos differed from his peers in his obedience and meekness, and was not a fan of noisy games or fun. The boy was indifferent to clothing and food, and from an early age he found pleasure in fasting and prayer, which sometimes frightened his mother.
