Church of the Venerable Euphrosyne, Grand Duchess of Moscow in Kotlovka

- a parish Orthodox church in the southwest of Moscow, in the Kotlovka district. The temple is dedicated to the Venerable Euphrosyne (in the world Evdokia), Grand Duchess of Moscow, wife of Dmitry Donskoy. The rector of the temple is Hieromonk Claudian.

History[edit]

The history of the temple begins in 2002, when, by Decree of Patriarch Alexy II, Archpriest Alexy Ladygin was appointed rector of the church under construction in the name of the Venerable Euphrosyne, Grand Duchess of Moscow in Kotlovka.

From 2002 to 2010, the parish of the temple was located in the house church at 15 Sevastopolsky Avenue.

Since 2010, divine services have begun to be held in the newly built church, and after the minor consecration of the temple on February 6, 2011, performed by Bishop Irinarch of Krasnogorsk, divine services become regular.

In 2011–2012, the iconostasis was installed, and from the beginning of 2013, artistic work on painting the temple began.

In 2012, construction work was completed and the temple was put into operation.

In 2021, by decree of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus', Hieromonk Claudian (Safonov) becomes the rector of the temple.

Current state

Divine services are regularly held in God's house; educational and missionary activities are also carried out here; the community does a lot of useful and charitable work. Clergy and parishioners are trying to imitate the righteous life of Saint Euphrosyne, trying to introduce the Orthodox people to the historical and cultural heritage of the capital.

  • The temple regularly conducts excursions for children, who are taught the basics of moral behavior. Invited students watch useful films and listen to seminars. The church community is active on the Internet; you can communicate with its members on social networks. For small children, there is a children's room where parents can be with their children without interruption from the divine service - there is a sound broadcast of the rituals in the room.
  • Since 2002, a Sunday school has been operating at the Church of St. Euphrosyne, which was initially formed around the house chapel. At the beginning of the year, the abbot holds a prayer service, which is attended by students and their parents. Sunday school teachers say their job is not only to teach theoretical knowledge about church history and religious rules, but also to help children grow up to be godly Christians with good moral values.

Divine service in the Church of Euphrosyne of Moscow

  • Children are taught the Law of God, icon painting, church singing and the Church Slavonic language. Sunday school is intended for students aged 7-14 years; a special preschool studio accepts children from one and a half years old. The little ones have the opportunity to play, do handicrafts and music, talk to them and read fairy tales. Before the divine holidays, the preschool group prepares together for the celebration, because such an association helps strengthen relationships between family members and friends.
  • Adult parishioners are active and do their best to help the community flourish. They also have the opportunity to go to Sunday school, classes are taught by church clergy. The lessons cover a wide range of issues on religion and icon painting. After classes, parishioners can ask the clergy questions of interest. About the temple and sisterhood in honor of Euphrosyne of Moscow with many children

On July 20, the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates the day of remembrance of the Venerable Euphrosyne (in the world Grand Duchess Evdokia of Moscow), wife of the blessed Prince Demetrius Donskoy, who in her life combined state and family service, widespread charity, and at the end of her life, monastic work.
She died in 1407 at the age of 54. In a year, July 20 will mark 610 years since her death. Also, her memorial day was celebrated on May 30. We talk about the veneration of this great Russian saint, about the temple and sisterhood that bear her name, with Oksana Sivakova, editor of the only Orthodox women's magazine in Russia "Slavyanka", a parishioner of the Moscow Church of Euphrosyne of Moscow. Oksana likes to repeat the words of academician Dmitry Sergeevich Likhachev that “the state consists not of millions of people, but of millions of families,” because the strength and greatness of our country depends on the strength of the family. – Oksana, on July 8, all of Russia celebrated the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity.
For believers, this is also the day of remembrance of the holy noble princes Peter and Fevronia of Murom. And on June 1, we met with you at the celebration of Children’s Day and Parental Happiness, which was held for the first time in the Church of Euphrosyne of Moscow. What do the names of the Grand Duchesses Evdokia of Moscow and Fevronia of Murom mean to you? – I really revere these great Russian princesses. In monasticism they both bore the name Euphrosyne, which means “Joy.” Their lives were joy for the entire Russian land. Both were faithful wives and helpers to their husbands - Prince Peter (monastically David) and Prince Dimitri Donskoy. According to the church calendar, the day of remembrance of the holy noble princes Peter and Fevronia is celebrated on one day - July 8, and the celebration of the memory of another grand ducal couple in the church calendar previously fell on different days. The day of remembrance of the Venerable Euphrosyne (in the world Evdokia) of Moscow was celebrated on May 30 and July 20, and the memory of the blessed Grand Duke Demetrius Donskoy was celebrated on June 1. But now, by decision of the Holy Synod, the Day of General Remembrance of Saints Demetrius Donskoy and Euphrosyne (Evdokia) of Moscow has been established - June 1. It is very gratifying that now we honor them together as a symbol of good marriage, parenthood, and family.

– This happened on the initiative of Natalya Viktorovna Yakunina and other participants in the “Sacredness of Motherhood” program. I remember your very interesting interview with Natalya Viktorovna, published in the Slavyanka magazine.

– I am very grateful to Natalya Viktorovna for the interview “Family is the Ark of Salvation,” which was published in the Slavyanka magazine in the January-March 2009 issue.
All these years I have been following the news of the Sanctity of Motherhood program. And I’m glad that thanks to the program, Russians have a new holiday. I hope that in the very near future it will be held not only in Moscow, not only in our parish, as it was this year, but in every city, in every village. I believe that it will become all-Russian and national, like Children’s Day, like the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity. A holiday is a very powerful means of education. We saw on TV how hundreds of families come to Murom for a holiday filled with a warm atmosphere of love, kindness, faith, and come to a concert. We all want our married life to be long and happy. Therefore, many newlyweds come to their wedding in Murom from other places. Even people far from the church, unchurched, so to speak, come to the holy relics of Peter and Fevronia to ask for their blessing for marriage, because this holy couple serves as an example of marital love and fidelity. At the end of their lives, they took monasticism and died as the fairy tale says: “They lived happily and died on the same day.” But we know little about the children in this family. I’m afraid I’ll be wrong, but I read in some sources that Peter and Fevronia had no children, in others that they had three children. This is probably why it was not them, but Saints Demetrius and Evdokia who became the heavenly patrons of the All-Russian program “The Sanctity of Motherhood”. This grand-ducal family symbolizes the idea of childbearing and parental happiness, because they gave birth to and raised 12 beautiful children. That is why the Day of Children and Parental Happiness is a beautiful and kind family holiday that can show everyone how wonderful it is to have children - as many as the Lord gives. Yes, any family is important and valuable, even if there are few children in it. Nowadays there are a lot of small and childless couples. Many women want to have children but cannot for various reasons. But lately in Russia there has been a “fashion” for a large, friendly, strong family. This is exactly what the family of Grand Duchess Euphrosyne of Moscow and the blessed Prince Dimitry Donskoy was like. Living in the most difficult era of state formation for Rus', they communicated with the saints, Metropolitan Alexy of Moscow, and St. Sergius of Radonezh, and they themselves were awarded crowns of holiness from the Lord. But not everyone realizes that the Venerable Euphrosyne of Moscow and her ardent and deep faith in God played a major role in the creation of the Russian state, along with St. Sergius, Demetrius Donskoy and other saints. After the death of her husband, she took upon herself the care of widows and orphans, founded new monasteries, orphanages, and built churches. Even her children did not know that under her princely clothes she wore a hair shirt for years. She is called the mistress of Moscow. Her holy relics are in the Moscow Kremlin. – What do you remember from your conversation with Natalya Viktorovna Yakunina, chairman of the board of trustees of the “Sacredness of Motherhood” program?
– I’m always interested in how a person comes to faith. Answering this question, Natalya Viktorovna admitted that she was inspired by the example of such great women who lived in Russia as the holy Grand Duchesses Elizaveta Feodorovna and Euphrosyne of Moscow, as well as Maria Tuchkova, the founder of the Spaso-Borodinsky Monastery, who built a temple on Borodino Field in memory of to her dead husband and the soldiers who fell there. Natalya Viktorovna also greatly respects Empress Alexandra Feodorovna Romanova, who together with her children took part in the “White Flower” charity festival. It has been revived in Livadia and in many cities of Russia and other countries. In 2008, Natalya Yakunina, together with a delegation from the St. Andrew the First-Called Foundation, traveled to Crimea for the White Flower holiday with a photo exhibition “From Mercy to Holiness,” dedicated to Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna. The exhibition was donated to the Livadia Palace. Natalya Viktorovna was also influenced by pilgrimage trips to the shrines of Orthodoxy and acquaintance with the lives of holy ascetics. Her family life is closely intertwined with public life, so she and her husband celebrate Orthodox holidays among representatives of the Church and state, in the circle of friends and like-minded people. According to her, the employees of the St. Andrew the First-Called Foundation are one big family. Communication with many representatives of the clergy and, of course, with the late His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II played a big role in Natalya Viktorovna’s life.

– On January 23, 2008, Patriarch Alexy II awarded Natalya Viktorovna Yakunina with the Order of the Russian Orthodox Church, established in honor of the Holy Venerable Euphrosyne.

– According to Natalya Viktorovna, receiving such a large award from the hands of His Holiness the Patriarch obliged her to a lot. She prays to Saint Euphrosyne to help her, as the director of the Sanctity of Motherhood program, serve Russian society, the state and the Russian Orthodox Church. According to the Apostle Paul, a woman is saved by bearing children. And I am glad that the “Sacredness of Motherhood” program pays great attention to this issue in a variety of directions - this is working with single mothers, raising children and adolescents, and organizing courses and competitions for psychologists and doctors working in maternity hospitals and antenatal clinics, and publishing books, and much more.

– Your interview “Family is the Ark of Salvation” has the same name as one of the creative competitions of the “Sanctity of Motherhood” program and a book published within its framework.

– This name seemed very apt to me, because the family is really the only place where a person not only takes a break from work, where he receives joy from communicating with his family, but is also spiritually saved. If you grew up in a loving family, then it will be easier for you to create your own family. According to Christian teaching, a family is a small Church, and marriage is one of the sacraments established by the Church. Metropolitan of Moscow Filaret (Drozdov) called the seven roots of the state, on the health of which the health of society and the nation depends.

– Oksana, even a month and a half after the Day of Children and Parental Happiness, I am impressed by it. It is no coincidence that this new holiday on the first day of summer was held in your church, where there were many children. You and your son Timofey were there too. How did you become parishioners of this temple? Why did you choose him?

– We live not very far from the Church of St. Euphrosyne of Moscow. We started coming here several years ago, when it was just starting to be built. Every year the parish grows, and more and more people come to our church, where the miraculous icon of St. Euphrosyne is located. In the large icon case under glass, more and more jewelry appears each time - rings, chains, earrings, bracelets, which believers bring as a token of gratitude for the healings and other help of St. Euphrosyne of Moscow. The temple has recently been painted. All parishioners took part in this with great joy. Both the construction and painting of the temple are the result of the cathedral prayer and diligence of the parishioners, the result of the work of the rector of the temple, Archpriest Alexy Ladygin and all our priests. Every year we see something new near the temple: a square, a chapel, a monument to Saints Demetrius Donskoy and Euphrosyne of Moscow. Every year the temple blossoms more and more. I hope that our parishioners will have more and more children, that Saints Euphrosyne and Demetrius Donskoy, who had many children, will become patrons not only of our church, but also of family happiness, patrons of children and our lives. Father Alexey Ladygin expressed gratitude to the parish of the temple, the leadership and employees of the St. Andrew the First-Called Foundation, the benefactors of the temple Vladimir and Natalya Yakunin, Viktor Bushuev, the Moscow City Government, and other people. On behalf of the Department of National Policy of Interregional Relations and Tourism of the City of Moscow, Konstantin Leonidovich Blazhenov, deputy head of the Department of Vladimir Chernikov, spoke.

– On June 1, I met many interesting people: Gennady Pchelnikov, and cost estimate engineer Lyudmila Dovgan from the sisterhood in honor of St. Euphrosyne of Moscow.
Lyudmila joined this friendly team two months after its creation. Before that, I knew nothing about his heavenly patroness. At the celebration, she and her friend sold souvenirs with the sisterhood’s logo for donations that went towards its needs. – The sisterhood, which is friends with the Church of St. Euphrosyne of Moscow, is spiritually cared for by Archimandrite Dorofey (Vechkanov), rector of the Church of the Beheading of John the Baptist in Gorki-8. This temple is located in the Odintsovo district. On the page of the sisterhood, created in November 2014, on the social network VKontakte it is written that on June 18, the sisters congratulated their beloved confessor on Angel Day.

– Thanks to the Internet, Lyudmila Dovgan met the co-chairs of the sisterhood Elena Slepova-Kobzar, Anastasia Kazakova and Ekaterina Melnikova, and later with its chairman Valentina Averyanova. Have you visited the sisterhood group on VKontakte?

– Yes, I looked at the group’s page and was surprised to learn that today it already has more than 1,500 people living in different regions of Russia. There are about a hundred active members of the sisterhood living in Moscow. The sisters, for the glory of God, are engaged in works of mercy: they feed the homeless at the Kievsky railway station together with the “Hangar of Salvation”, for the second year they conduct master classes in a rehabilitation center for children with cancer, where they go together with the head of the department, Yulia Ivanova. Once they and the children made an applique of lilacs from colored paper, a Russian birch tree from plasticine and paper, and much more. (The sisterhood also has its own page on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/753169548027465/1231249700219445/?notif_t=like¬if_id=1466500542090479).

– At a celebration in your church, I met the boy Daniil Ditsa, one of the altar boys of the church. Do you know anything about him?

– Daniel is the youngest of the altar servers. He is now 10 years old. He is only three years older than my son Timofey. He comes from a large believing family with three sons and a daughter. Dad works as a builder, and mom is a housewife. For the first time, Daniel felt that God heard him when he asked the priest, who did not want to take him to the altar the first time, to accept him the second time after fervent prayer. He came to the priest and said: “Father, can I serve at the altar with you?” When Father Alexy asked why he wanted to become an altar boy, Daniel replied: “You can be saved.” Once we talked with Daniil about what it’s like to be an altar boy, he said that being an altar boy is very difficult, it’s a lot of work. First you need to prepare for the service, then you need to perform your duties during the service, and at the end of it you need to clean up so that the altar is clean. He dreams of becoming a priest to serve in our church. In the meantime, he goes to Sunday school, where they are told about Euphrosyne of Moscow, and about her wife, and about other saints. Like all children, on June 1, Diniil and my Timosha were given a beautifully published book by Anastasia Gerasimova, “Reverend Euphrosyne of Moscow.”

– Has Timofey already read this book?

– Timosha started reading it on the same day. And he received this wonderful gift on the eve of the day of memory of the blessed Prince Dovmont, at the Holy Epiphany of Timothy, that is, right on his name day. Coming home from the holiday, Timosha immediately began reading about the saint, before whose miraculous image we always pray in church. My son already knew that the Battle of Kulikovo was won by Dmitry Donskoy after the blessing of St. Sergius of Radonezh, whose icons we have at home. And from the book, Timothy learned that Evdokia of Moscow provided great assistance in the victory over the enemy, who, together with her people, fervently prayed to God and the Mother of God for the victory of Russian soldiers over the Mongol-Tatars. Before going to bed, Timosha and I told our dad about the wonderful holiday with a concert and delicious porridge at the Ataman field kitchen. How much joy children and parents had on this day! The Cossack choir sang cheerfully, and both kids and big boys enjoyed the fun. They played tug of war, shot at the shooting range, and walked on stilts. In the park, children rode ponies, and adults rode horses. Whole families with children came. This is a great opportunity to experience joy with the whole family. A holiday dedicated to children and parental happiness is the beginning of a good tradition that, year after year, will bring our families together on the day of remembrance of Saints Demetrius of Donskoy and Euphrosyne of Moscow. This is a real example for us, an example of holiness, an example of parental happiness, an example of the greatness of the family. The state is responsible for the family. A new day dedicated to family unity is another step towards strengthening our country, towards turning to true values and joys. The saints were the parents of 12 children. If there are many children in our families, if our children know about Saints Demetrius and Euphrosyne, seeing the joy of this day, kissing the icons of the saints, then from childhood we will plant the best seeds in them.

The Church of St. Euphrosyne of Moscow on Nakhimovsky Prospekt is being built from personalized bricks

Moscow. May 30, 2007

The first temple in honor of the patroness of Moscow, the wife of Dmitry Donskoy, Saint Grand Duchess Evdokia (Euphrosyne) of Moscow, is being built on Nakhimovsky Avenue from personalized bricks.

“This is the first church in the capital in honor of the Moscow saint. We have churches of St. Olga, but Olga is not a Moscow saint, Anastasia, but she is a universal saint. And the Venerable Euphrosyne is the first ruler of the capital, from which Muscovite Rus' began,” said the rector of the church under construction, priest Alexey Ladygin, on Tuesday in Moscow at a press conference dedicated to the 600th anniversary of the Dormition of the holy princess.

The priest emphasized that any believer can contribute to the construction of the temple, and there are already hundreds of such people. “Now, while the walls are not plastered, you can see that every brick is signed with the name of the donor, and the name is a mystical reflection of the essence of a person,” Ladygin noted.

The price of a personalized brick is 100 rubles. The rector expressed hope that the construction, which began in July 2006, will be completed during this anniversary year. “If there are funds,” Ladygin emphasized.

According to him, neither the federal nor the capital authorities provide financial assistance to the community. “And now about 20 million rubles are needed just for heat and sewerage,” the clergyman added.

The chief architect of the project, Leonid Kolokolov, said that an entire temple complex would be erected, consisting of a church building and a separate bell tower. The white single-domed church in the Vladimir-Suzdal style will rise almost 40 meters (the height of a 12-story building), and can accommodate about 600 parishioners. According to him, by now the ground floor has been built, as well as the walls of the temple to a height of four meters. “In the appearance of this church, we wanted to emphasize the feminine principle,” the architect noted.

In the future, it is also planned to install a monument to St. Euphrosyne of Moscow on the territory of the complex, RIA Novosti reports.

His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II, according to the participants of the press conference, blessed the establishment of the order in the name of the holy princess.

After the completion of the construction of the temple, the relics of St. Euphrosyne of Moscow will be transferred to it, until the end of the 1920s they rested in the Ascension Monastery of the Kremlin, founded by the princess - the tomb of Russian princesses and queens, which was destroyed during the years of Soviet power.

“Since 2000, we have been studying this tomb. We managed to collect all the remains of St. Evdokia Dmitrievna. Her portrait was restored, since the skull was preserved in good condition. Skeletal studies have been carried out. There were no harmful accumulations (from medicines, cosmetics used in the Middle Ages). She was a fragile woman, about 1 meter 55 centimeters tall. She died at the age of 50-55 years. Part of her leather monastic belt with the image of the Twelve Feasts has also been preserved,” said Tatyana Panova, chief archaeologist of the Moscow Kremlin Museum.

It is assumed that the remains of St. The princesses will be transferred to a special chapel of the Archangel Cathedral, and then to a temple built in her honor.

“Many Muscovites are waiting for the opportunity to venerate the relics of the saint. Now in our temporary church on Sevastopol Avenue there is an icon with a particle of her relics. She especially helps mothers who cannot give birth to children. In my parish, there were cases when women were unable to give birth to a child for 10 years, and then, through the prayers of Saint Euphrosyne, their family life improved,” said the rector of the church under construction.

After the death of Saint Prince Dmitry Donskoy, Grand Duchess Evdokia became co-ruler with her son, Vasily the First. It is she who is responsible for the return of Metropolitan Cyprian to the primate see and the establishment of Moscow's status as a capital. Also associated with the name of Evdokia is the transfer of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God to Moscow during the invasion of Tamerlane.

Shortly before her death, the holy princess built the Ascension Monastery in the Kremlin, where she became a monk with the name Euphrosyne. The place for the construction of the temple in her honor was not chosen by chance - there was a grand ducal estate and there the princess met Metropolitan Cyprian of Moscow.
