Outstanding religious figures of Bashkortostan: Metropolitan Nikon
Today, Metropolitan Nikon, the head of the Bashkortostan Metropolis, celebrates his 65th anniversary, who for many years has devoted all his strength and skill to strengthening the Russian Orthodox Church, contributing to the establishment of interfaith stability in Russia and Bashkortostan.
His Eminence (in the world - Nikolai Vasyukov) was born on October 1, 1950 in the village of Maryevka, Sampursky district, Tambov region. In 1963, the Vasyukov family moved to Krasnoyarsk. Together with his mother, Nikolai began to visit the local Trinity Church. At the age of 16 he began going to the choir and participated in divine services. His spiritual mentors were the rector of the temple, Archimandrite Niphon, nun Seraphim, schema-nun Innocent and monk Job.
In 1968, Nikolai graduated from high school and entered the Krasnoyarsk Medical Institute. After successfully graduating from the institute, he worked as a local therapist in one of the clinics in Krasnoyarsk. Then he was drafted into the ranks of the Soviet Army, where in 1975-1977 he served as a senior regiment doctor. After military service, he worked as the chief physician of a clinic in the city of Svetlogorsk, Leningrad Region. He was a major in the reserve medical service.
In the early 80s of the last century, he made a firm decision to devote himself entirely to the church. In 1983, he was ordained a priest and began serving in the Neopalimovskaya Church in the city of Ulyanovsk. On March 13, 1984, he was tonsured a monk with the name Nikon in honor of the Monk Nikon, abbot of Radonezh. In September 1985, he was appointed rector of the Neopalimovskaya Church and dean of the Ulyanovsk region. Since October 1, 1989, he was secretary of the Ulyanovsk diocesan administration.
He constantly worked to improve his educational level. In 1987 he graduated from the Leningrad Theological Seminary. In 1990 he completed his studies at the Leningrad Theological Academy. Later he successfully defended his thesis and became a candidate of theology.
In 1988 and 1990 he participated in the work of local councils of the Russian Orthodox Church. He was a participant in the Councils of Bishops in the 90s. As part of groups of pilgrims, he repeatedly visited the holy Mount Athos in Greece. In 1993 and 1996, he led pilgrims from the Ufa diocese during a visit to Jerusalem.
By the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on June 26, 1990, Nikon was elected Bishop of Ufa and Sterlitamak. On August 26 of the same year, he was ordained by His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II to this high position.

During Metropolitan Nikon's leadership of the Ufa diocese, the number of parishes increased sharply. If in 1990 there were 28 of them, now they have exceeded 350, and eight monasteries have appeared. In recent years, churches have been built and restored in Oktyabrsky, Meleuz, Salavat, Ishimbay, Kumertau, and other cities and villages of the metropolis. After lengthy renovations, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Ufa has been revived. The Exaltation of the Cross convent in Ufa and the Ufa diocesan branch of the Moscow Orthodox St. Tikhon's Theological Institute were opened. The publication of the Ufa Diocesan Gazette has been resumed.
Metropolitan Nikon paid and continues to pay a lot of attention to the preparation of priests for new parishes. If in 1990 there were only 19 priests in the Ufa diocese, now their number has exceeded 220. Today, several dozen students of the Ufa diocese study in theological seminaries and academies of Russia.
On the initiative of Metropolitan Nikon, a publishing department of the diocese was created, and work is underway to research and study materials on the new martyrs of the Bashkir region. Under him, the diocesan library was opened, and icon painting workshops began to operate.
His whole life is a worthy example of service to God and the people. He has done and is doing a lot to spread the culture of Orthodoxy and the best Orthodox traditions, and maintain political stability in the republic.
