General information about Orthodox fairs
After the collapse of the USSR and the departure of atheistic power, spiritual life began to resume in Russia. Orthodox organizations began to work openly, and the construction of churches began. On this wave, Orthodox fairs spread massively. For many years, these events were a mixture of a market and an icon shop, where goods of completely different directions were sold.
The Orthodox fair is a sale of various goods associated with the Orthodox religious movement. The sale is carried out by representatives of both large churches and monasteries, and small thematic publishing houses and icon painting shops, as well as other organizations participating in the life of the Orthodox community.
The Orthodox Fair in Sokolniki is an event where you can buy candles, church supplies and delve into the culture of Orthodoxy.
Now Orthodox fairs are seen as a phenomenon that shows church life outside of churches.
To participate in fairs, monasteries and churches deliver icons and shrines revered by believers. In addition, donations are collected at fairs for the restoration and construction of churches, and to support small church workshops. Such events are practically the only way to market products for remote dioceses.
Orthodox churches from all districts and regions of Russia can participate in the fair. At some fairs you can meet Orthodox figures from America, England and other foreign countries.
Also present at the events are representatives of:
- Ukraine.
- Belarus.
- Serbia.
- Georgia.
- Greece.
- Jerusalem.
At certain points of the pavilion where the Orthodox fair is held, you can leave notes “On health”, “On repose”, and order the “Indestructible Psalter”. The organizers of such events pay great attention to cultural and educational work, and therefore during the exhibition you can listen to lectures by church ministers, Orthodox psychologists and other church leaders.
At Orthodox fairs they sell:
- candles;
- icons;
- crosses and neck chains made of gold and silver;
- spiritual literature;
- medicinal herbs;
- tea fees;
- dishes;
- incense.
Today, the activities of Orthodox fairs, exhibitions and festivals are strictly controlled by the organizers and representatives of the local diocese, which oversees the events. In the last few years, fairs have undergone major reorganization.
All exhibition displays are divided into thematic blocks, and performances by priests and a concert program are held in the conference hall. In addition, before the opening of the fair, each participant in the event is checked, as are the goods he sells, each of which must correspond to the purpose of the exhibition.
Now the fair has numerous departments:
- food;
- spiritual and classical literature;
- folk crafts;
- church utensils and household items;
- clothing;
- products made in monasteries.
Despite the abundance of goods presented at exhibition stands, the idea of holding Orthodox fairs is far from the usual marketing of products. Their main goal is educational. Fairs are held to attract not only church-going Orthodox Christians, but also people taking their first steps in becoming acquainted with religion, as well as those interested in spiritual issues.
Therefore, in recent years, fair trade has faded into the background, opening up space for the education of citizens in issues of interest to them regarding the life of Orthodox Christianity.
Bells ringing
The Orthodox fair in Sokolniki “Ringing of Bells” is considered one of the most famous events of this kind. The fair takes place under the patronage of the temple in Sadovniki, named after Sophia the Wisdom of God. It is held several times a year in Sokolniki Pavilion No. 2.
The purpose of the fair is:
- the unification of church and secular organizations to spread the traditional Christian worldview;
- establishing friendly communication between representatives of various dioceses and Orthodox Christians in Russia;
- push people towards mercy and humility through coming to Orthodoxy.
At the moment, about 500 organizations are participating in the fair, including:
- Churches and monasteries of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and other Orthodox neighboring countries.
- Publishers of thematic religious literature.
- Charitable foundations.
- Art and antique shops.
- Educational organizations.
- Representatives of radio and television broadcasting.
“Ringing Bells” conducts daily prayer services, accompanied by parting sermons for listeners. The clergy carefully monitor the progress of the fair, the contents of the stalls and the participants of the event. “Ringing of Bells” holds concerts of Orthodox performers, conversations with parishioners, and discussions of pressing religious issues.
Representatives of foundations involved in the support and Orthodox education of orphanages, homes for the elderly and people with disabilities post information about the needs of their wards. The fair constantly collects donations for remote dioceses and charitable organizations.
