Intercession 2021 – what it means, history and significance of the Christian holiday

Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary: what is it?

The history of the holiday of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary goes back to ancient times - from the events of the distant year 910 in Constantinople.

So, according to legend, Constantinople was in danger that year, because the city was besieged by opponents. One day, the Mother of God appeared to people praying in the Blachernae Church for liberation from enemies, walking in the air, illuminated by heavenly light and surrounded by angels and saints.

The Mother of God began to pray together with the believers, after which she took off the shining veil from her head (it is also called the omophorion) and spread it over all the people in the church. Thus, the Mother of God took the people under her care, and her cover protected believers from enemies visible and invisible: the enemy troops retreated and the city was saved.

Therefore, we can say that the Veil is protection.

that Constantinople was attacked by the Saracens, and many residents prayed on their knees and with tears that the trouble would pass. When a horde of enemies were already ready to break into the city, a miracle happened: Saint Fool-for-Christ Andrew saw that the Mother of God herself descended from heaven along the steps and, kneeling down, prayed with tears in her eyes for the salvation of the peoples. Soon after this, the Feast of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary was adopted in Rus'. From the Intercession of the Day - October 14 - weddings began to be celebrated, and on this day the girls went to church to pray that the Lord would send them good grooms. They believed that the white cover is the same omophorion with which the Heavenly Queen covers the earth and protects.

“I wish that the Mother of God always protects you, that she does not allow you to suffer and covers you with grace, that a bright angel answers your prayers with her, that she gives you happy days and supports you in everyday battles!”

The meaning of the holiday of Intercession

The Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos is now not just a religious holiday for Ukrainians, but also a folk and national one. On October 14, Ukraine also celebrates the Day of the Creation of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks and the Day of the Defender of Ukraine.

Historically, for the Ukrainian Cossacks, the day of the Intercession of the Mother of God was the most significant holiday. These glorious warriors of our land especially revered the Mother of God, considering the Virgin Mary to be their intercessor, and her protection as protection from various troubles and enemies. It was on this day that the Cossacks elected a new chieftain, and in honor of the Mother of God many churches were built and the icons of the Intercession were especially revered.

On October 14, the Church celebrates the memory of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. This holiday is associated with the miracle of the intercession of the Mother of God during the pagan attack on Constantinople.

In ancient times, the main stronghold of Orthodoxy was the capital of the Byzantine Empire - Constantinople. The Slavs called it Constantinople. Often pagan armies attacked the city and besieged it. In different centuries these were Avars, Arabs, Russ. Then the townspeople fervently prayed to the Queen of Heaven, and she helped rid the city of the invasion. This happened several times.

During one of these pagan attacks, a man of great piety lived in Constantinople - the holy fool Andrei. Together with other townspeople, he stood up to pray in the Blachernae temple. In the middle of the night, in the darkness, Andrei the Fool saw the Most Pure Mother of God above the temple, walking across the sky with a retinue of angels and saints. A heavenly radiance emanated from her.

The Mother of God began to pray for mercy towards Christians who were threatened with ruin and death. Then she took off her fiery Veil, which shone like lightning, and spread it over those praying in the temple. After some time, the Mother of God herself and her Intercession became invisible, but the grace emanating from them remained in the city.

Enemy troops retreated from Constantinople. The appearance of the Mother of God and her Intercession was a sign of the intercession of the heavenly powers for the Christian people.

In the 12th century, the holy noble prince Andrei Bogolyubsky became famous for his special veneration of the Most Pure Mother of God. He transported from Southern Rus' to the north, to Vladimir, the miraculous icon of the Mother of God. The prince built temples in Her honor. He ordered the establishment of a great celebration of the day when the Mother of God saved Constantinople from the pagans. The new holiday is loved in Rus'.

Grand Duke Andrei ordered the construction of a stone church in the name of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Nerl River, not far from his residence in Bogolyubovo. The temple was built on a beautiful hill above the water.

Ancient royalty passed from Vladimir to Moscow in the 14th century. And Moscow inherited from Vladimir a special veneration of the Mother of God. She began to be considered the heavenly patroness of the Moscow land. Before the icons of the Most Holy Theotokos, Moscow rulers knelt and prayed, setting off on the most dangerous campaigns. That is why in Moscow and its environs there are so many churches and monasteries consecrated in the name of the Intercession of the Most Pure One.
