Archimandrite Iannuariy (Ivliev) - biography, activities and interesting facts

Decades of atheism have led to the fact that even those Russians who consider themselves Orthodox Christians have little knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, not to mention the works of outstanding theologians of the past. As a result, they have many questions, the answers to which are extremely difficult to find without special knowledge. Therefore, the word of a wise shepherd, such as Archimandrite Iannuariy Ivliev, acquires special importance. His short biography will be presented in today's article.

Childhood

The future archimandrite Iannuariy Ivliev was born in 1943 in Vologda. His family consisted of ordinary Soviet employees. When Dima was 7 years old, his mother died. She, like her husband Yakov Ivliev, was an ardent communist, quite far from the church. The future archimandrite did not receive a Christian upbringing. But later he always noted that it was in his family and school that the basic moral principles that penetrated the blood and flesh of Russian culture from Orthodoxy were instilled in him.

In his teenage years, Dmitry showed an ability for natural sciences and mathematics. Therefore, no one was surprised by his decision to choose the profession of a physicist.

Study and work at the university

In the early 60s, the young man entered Leningrad University at the Faculty of Physics. In parallel with this, he attended the classical department of the Faculty of Philology, where he listened to lectures by the famous professor O.I. Dovatura. After graduating from a prestigious university in 1966, Dmitry Yakovlevich Ivliev entered graduate school. Until 1975, he worked at Leningrad State University as a researcher and was engaged in research in the field of near-Earth space physics.

Conversion

While studying in graduate school, the future Archimandrite Iannuariy Ivliev, who received an insignificant scholarship, began to look for part-time work. She shouldn't have interfered with his studies. There were few options. Dmitry was glad when he was hired as a night watchman at the St. Nicholas Cathedral. There the young man first came into contact with church life. He clearly saw its shortcomings: being confined to liturgical practice, strict supervision of the state, lack of youth and missionary work, etc. However, all this did not push him away. On the contrary, he was delighted and interested in the wealth of Orthodoxy, which was hidden behind visible poverty.

Dmitry began to haphazardly study Christian literature that just caught his eye. The first book he became acquainted with was “The Acts of the Holy Apostles.” Afterwards, he enthusiastically began to read the works of Russian religious philosophers Vladimir Solovyov and Father Pavel Florensky.

pathological speech

Confidently mastered pathological speech:

When asked from the audience how we should relate to the existing authorities in the country, the lecturer gave a completely comprehensive answer: there is simply no clear answer; in each specific case, a dissatisfied person must listen to the Holy Spirit and act in accordance with His will[4].

swear words

dualism

  • Since ancient times, this world (Hellenistic - Ed.) has been characterized by a dualistic view of man
    (in various variants).
    Relatively speaking, Greek dualism
can be characterized by the ancient saying “soma sema”, i.e. “the body is a coffin, a tomb.” Coffin of what? - Coffin of the soul. Body and soul are thought of as two different substances[5].

slogans

In the main thing - unity, in the secondary - freedom, in everything - love

The Apostle teaches how to get along with people, overcoming his false principles, which most often relate to secondary subjects, not essential for faith and salvation. One should be principled in the main thing, eternal and unchangeable, in love, which “never fails” (1 Cor. 13:8). Blessed Augustine reminded us of this several centuries later: “In the main thing there is unity, in the secondary thing there is freedom, in everything there is love.”[6]

pathological speech techniques

biblical allusion in pathological speech

  • The famous formula “I became everything to everyone.” This whole clever rhetorical passage is contained in this clever formula. Of course, for everyone, everything is not cheap opportunism, but only “for the sake of the Gospel” - this Paul immediately points out - this is for the Gospel, which he wants to proclaim to as many people as possible. Here Paul lays out missionary principles that are still important today. In general, the entire section on sacrifices to idols is suitable for any time. Paul here thinks about people, listens to what concerns them, what fears them, thinks about how to make the Gospel understandable, acceptable to people, in order to gain more. This contradicts many positions in today's Christianity, for example, sectarian desires to limit everything to a small flock. All this contradicts proud intolerance, intolerance, isolation in traditions, especially for traditional nationalist Churches, say, the Armenian. To proclaim as a goal a small righteous flock limited by certain traditions is theological nonsense; The gospel must reach as many people as possible. And this implies that it must be preached in a lively, situational, attractive way. This is not opportunism, this is love. The messenger must enter into the situation of people and love them. This is Paul's program. In this regard, I always look at today's discussions of church language. I am a big supporter of preserving the Church Slavonic language in worship (with some, perhaps, Russification), but, nevertheless, in mission and catechesis, a reasonably understandable language should be used. They often say: “let them grow up to the Church, we will not stoop to them.” This position is extremely ugly, blasphemous, but it is very widespread. Paul's program was completely different: to win many, although he realized that he could save only a few. -[7]

avoiding persecution

According to the explanation of close friends of Fr. Iannuariy (Ivliev), he adhered to atheistic views, but deliberately hid them from the uninitiated.

Father Iannuarius constantly told me something new that he could not or did not want to talk about in class. With his frank stories, he made me look differently at biblical texts and biblical studies in general[8].

He had his own opinion regarding the most important issues of triadology, Mariology, Christology, soteriology, sacramentology, ecclesiology and other branches of theology. His views were very different from what Christians around the world preach today. However, he never voiced them publicly, because he was a cautious person and preferred to talk about it only in the “kitchen.” But this does not mean that Father Iannuarius was insincere with his listeners and readers. He spoke and wrote WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK of what was permitted to him AS AN ORTHODOX CLEANER. Father Iannuarius was a HOSTAGE TO THE CROSS AND THE CASSBALL, especially since he did not set himself the task of fighting the existing system. Does this make his work less valuable? I think not, because a piece of what Father Iannuarius actually thought and felt is still in them, and inquiring minds will find it[9].

Believers have repeatedly asked Father Iannuarius (Ivliev) a question about the BIBLE roots of the Church Sacraments. In his opinion, the Church Sacraments have no roots in the Bible, and everything that is written about this in church literature is far-fetched. But in order to avoid conflict with believers, Father Iannuarius always tried to give them streamlined answers[10].

Father Iannuariy (Ivliev) was not only a biblical scholar, but also a physicist. And, of course, as a real physicist, he did not share any of the points of view regarding the afterlife existing in the religious community[11].

Study of Theology

At the end of the 1970s, the future Archimandrite Iannuariy Ivliev met Metropolitan Nikodim of Leningrad and Novgorod, who made a great impression on him. He invited the young scientist to become a student at the Leningrad Theological Academy. In October 1979, in the Assumption Church of the Cross, Dmitry was consecrated as Metropolitan of Leningrad and Novgorod as a reader.

Later, D. Ya. Ivliev took monastic vows with the name Iannuarius. Then he was ordained to the priesthood.

Service

Over the next three decades, Fr. Iannuarius taught the Holy Scriptures and performed various church obediences. He spent a lot of time studying issues relevant to modern theology. He tried to convey the Good News to every parishioner and even those people who had never before sought solace in Christianity.

In 1981, Fr. Iannuariy defended his dissertation, receiving the degree of candidate of theology. The topic of his work was patristic interpretations of certain passages of Holy Scripture. From that time on, Ivliev became a teacher at the Theological Academy, where he teaches biblical theology and the New Testament to this day.

In 1985 he was awarded the title of associate professor. A year later Fr. Iannuariy was elevated to the rank of archimandrite by the Metropolitan of Leningrad and Novgorod. In 2005, he was awarded the title of professor at the St. Petersburg Orthodox Theological Academy.

One of the main topics that Archimandrite Iannuariy Ivliev studies is the “Epistle of the Apostle Paul” and their interpretations by famous theologians of different eras. In addition, his Reverend is the author of various publications regarding biblical hermeneutics, “Apocalypse”, Holy Scripture, etc. Even this is not the end of my father’s scientific interests.

    quotes

Who will rush to study the Catechism after hearing that it is necessary “to please God and save the soul”? Besides, what kind of “salvation of the soul” is this?[12].

The anthropological myth of Hellenism “about the saved soul” was from the very beginning alien to the Revelation of Christ. “From the very beginning (he) was rejected by the Church as ... a destructive temptation, as a kind of dark counter-gospel ... (1 John 4: 2-3). And the Apostle Paul speaks expressively about “the redemption of our body” (Rom. 8:23), “for we do not want to be unclothed, but to be clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up in life” (2 Cor. 5:4)”[13]. Well, whose heart will beat stronger, having learned that “faith is the revelation of things hoped for, the proof of things not seen” (Heb. 11:1)? That salvation is salvation from sin, the curse of the law and from death? Etc., etc. Yes, this is some kind of herbarium of once green and blooming, full of life words, but now dried and neat rows of quotes laid between the pages[12].

    Conversations by Archimandrite Iannuariy Ivliev

The well-known radio station “Grad Petrov” regularly broadcasts audio recordings of the priest’s lectures. They present the Holy Scripture to listeners in an accessible form and convey the Good News to every person. Thanks to these programs, many residents of St. Petersburg even thought about the salvation of their souls and returned to the bosom of the church. The audience of “Conversations” is quite large and includes both young people and people of the older generation, who at one time were deprived of the opportunity to become acquainted with the works of great theologians.

Now you know who Archimandrite Iannuariy Ivliev is. The “Apocalypse”, Holy Scripture and other great books of the Old and New Testaments in his interpretation open up the world of Christianity with its eternal moral values to any person.
