At this point in the Bible, the topic of moral responsibility for one’s actions is raised for the first time, and also for the first time, even before Cain commits a crime, only after he displays feelings of envy, the word “sin” is pronounced[6]:

If you do good, don't you raise your face? and if you do not do good, then sin lies at the door; he attracts you to himself, but you dominate him. 4:7

You can also notice that Cain tried to hide the fact of what he had done before God:

And the Lord said to Cain: Where is Abel your brother? He said: I don’t know; Am I my brother's keeper? Gen. 4:9

The motif of God's preference for the younger brother is found elsewhere in the Bible - in the stories of Esau and Jacob, Joseph and his eleven older brothers, David and his older brothers. Abel is the first in this series[6].

When Dasha’s classmate Asya (Angelina Dobrorodnova) is soon killed, not a trace remains of the quiet life in the family...

– Many people hated Asya. For example, Dasha was jealous of her boyfriend Sancho (Artem Gubin), with whom Asya was friends. Kostya was in love with Asya, and she, pushing him away, started an affair with Danya, which caused Kostya’s resentment and anger, says director Vladimir Fatyanov. “And it turns out that each of the three could have killed a girl with the same character as the deceased.” Anxiety settles in Lisa's soul. First, she learns about her son’s love, then about Dasha’s quarrel with her friend. And having discovered Asya’s bloody earring on her daughter, the mother completely loses peace.

While Lisa is tormented by painful doubts, Dasha and Kostya are suspected of Danya’s murder.

– This story is about the value of human life, which can end at any moment. A story about understanding and trust in a family. Often, when adults do not understand children, and children do not want to hear their parents and each other, secrets appear that lead to misfortunes. And it’s worth remembering the most important point: people shouldn’t be evil,” continues Vladimir Fatyanov. – Human life is valuable because no one has the right to take it.

Filming took place in the Moscow region in the fall of 2021.

“One early November morning we arrived in the Istra region and, positioned opposite the New Jerusalem Monastery, began filming,” says the director. “And then suddenly helicopters started flying, people came up to us and told us to quickly remove the cameras and leave the territory. It turned out that on that day the restoration of the monastery was completed, and in addition to the patriarch, Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev were waiting here. But since we were on a strict shooting schedule, we were forced to hide in a distant part of a nearby cemetery and continued working there. We filmed the first episodes of the film, when Lisa visits the grave of her deceased husband, on that very day.

The director recalls that when Olga Budina was offered to read the script, she set a condition: if she did not understand who the killer was before the fourth episode, she would agree to the role.

“To our general joy, she didn’t guess,” the director smiles. – I had never worked with Olga before, and during this filming I learned how efficient a person she is. And what a wonderful Dmitry Ulyanov is. Charming and organic. I received enormous pleasure from working with Budina and Ulyanov. Our investigators Sveta (Alena Sozinova) and Slava (Egor Kovalev) made a wonderful tandem with good humor. Young artists Sonya Shcherbakova and Pyotr Grezev, guys with extraordinary acting skills, also pleased with their work. And Vanya Sukhanov had previously acted with me, as a child, in the film “Justice of Wolves.” So I knew about his abilities for a long time.

The well-established expression “The Seal of Cain” means “a sign of an outcast, a symbol of rejection, ostracism or an indelible stain of crime”[1].

and is connected with two facts: the crime of Cain and the seal that God made on his forehead. “And the Lord made a sign for Cain, so that no one who met him would kill him” (Gen. 4:15). The name of the first murderer on earth, Cain, became a household name, and means a person capable of meanness, envy, and malice towards people who trusted him[2]. The qualities attributed to Cain are reflected in the etymology of the word “cursed,” which comes from the verb “to curse.”

Cain, the son of Adam and Eve, killed his brother Abel in the field because of envy. Envy arose because God preferred the sacrifice (gratitude to God) of Abel to the sacrifice of Cain. Abel sacrificed from the firstborn flock of sheep, and Cain - from the fruits of the ground, as it is written in Scripture, after some time (Gen. 4: 3-5). God cursed Cain for killing Abel (this is the main thing), and, secondly, being upset, he hid his crime from God.

What happened to Cain? “And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened its mouth to receive the blood of thy brother at thy hand; when you cultivate the land, it will no longer give its strength to you; you will be an exile and a wanderer on earth. And Cain said to the Lord: My punishment is more than can be endured; behold, You are now driving me from the face of the earth, and I will hide from Your presence, and I will be an exile and a wanderer on the earth; and whoever meets me will kill me. And the Lord said to him: therefore, whoever kills Cain will be avenged sevenfold. And the Lord made a sign for Cain, so that no one who met him would kill him” (Gen. 4:11-15). “Cain, thanks to a special sign given to him by God, was protected from the vengeance of people, which, as he himself realized, he deserved”[3]. After this, Cain went on behalf of God to the East from Eden to the land of Nod. His wife gave birth to a son, Enoch, after whom he named the city he built. Further, we know nothing about the life of Cain from the Holy Scriptures.

What is the mark of Cain? The medieval interpreter Rashi (XI-XII centuries) points out that a sign is the first letter of the name of God. Ambrose of Milan (IV century) in his 2nd Epistle states: “And although Cain was branded like a slave, this did not help him avoid execution”[4]. What kind of mark is this? Saint Philaret (Drozdov) believes that this mark could consist of excellent clothing or some kind of image on the forehead. There is also a psychological theory: Cain had a mark in the form of a different expression on his face, which changed, which is described by the words of the Bible “why did your face droop?” “Cain’s horror and despair could have formed in his outer man a clear and indelible stamp of rejection, which would have made him a living monument of God’s judgment and would have removed all who saw him from him.”[5] On the one hand, Cain’s face showed that he had committed murder, on the other, Cain’s seal served as protection for himself. Why is this? It was made after Cain said: “You are now driving me off the face of the earth, and I will hide from Your presence, and I will be an exile and a wanderer on the earth; and whoever meets me will kill me.” In other words, Cain's fear is obvious: He killed his brother. God isolates him from other people, to the outskirts of Paradise, which could mean rejection by God. If so, then anyone can do with him as he pleases. And knowing that Cain is a murderer, they can also kill him.

Preserving and protecting Cain from future possible reprisals of people and in order to prevent blood feud, God calms the sinner, promising him: whoever kills him will take sevenfold revenge. The fear of sevenfold vengeance will have to stop anyone who wants to kill Cain. Metropolitan Philaret (Drozdov) gives an example of another possible translation: “... He performed some miracle to calm him down with assurance that no one who met him would kill him.”

Thus, based on the Holy Tradition and its interpretation, we see that the seal of Cain itself is evidence of the murder committed and, on the other hand, serves as protection for Cain. Gradually, the seal of Cain became an allusion, an indication of Cain’s evil inclinations, which we talked about at the very beginning of the article: namely meanness, envy and malice towards people who trusted him.

  • Epiphanius of Cyprus in the “Panarion”, with reference to the Book of Jubilees, calls Cain’s wife Sheba (Σαυή), his elder sister[17].
  • Demetrius of Rostov’s Cell Chronicle mentions Cain’s only-born sister Kalmana[18].
  • Mkhitar of Ayrivank reports that Adam and Eve “gave birth to Cain and Klima his sister”[19].

Said-Afandi al-Chirkawi, without citing sources, reports that:

  • Kabil and Iklima were born together;
  • The Almighty ordered Adam to marry Kabil to Iklim, because she, as a twin, was forbidden to marry Kabil[20].
  • Eliyahu Essas: with reference to Isaac Abrabanel[21] reports that Cain’s wife’s name was Kalmana[22].
  • with reference to the Talmud[23] reports that Cain married the sisters of Hebel (Abel) (there were two of them)[24].

About Abel's sisters:

Children

According to the Bible, in the land of Nod[30] Cain had a son, Enoch[31].

According to the “Book of Jubilees” (c. 2nd century BC), Avan gave birth to Enoch to Cain[16].

Vardan the Great:

  • names the sons of Cain: Enoch, Gaidad, Maleleel, Methuselah and Lamech[32].

Based on the parallels in the genealogies of Cain and Seth and the similarity or coincidence of the names of their descendants, a number of scientists who support the documentary hypothesis have concluded that both genealogies go back to a single legend[35], being different versions of the same list. The descendants of Cain are classified as the Yahwist, and the descendants of Seth as the Sources of the priests:

  • Cain and Cainan the son of Enosh;
  • Enoch, son of Cain and Enoch, son of Jared (and also possibly Enosh, son of Seth);
  • Irad, son of Enoch, grandson of Cain, and Jared, father of Enoch, descendant of Seth;
  • Mechiael, great-grandson of Cain, and Maleleel (Mahalal'el), great-grandson of Seth;
  • Methuselah, a descendant of Cain, and Methuselah, a descendant of Seth;
  • Lamech, son of Methuselah, descendant of Cain, and Lamech, son of Methuselah, descendant of Seth;
  • Noema, daughter of Lamech, descendant of Cain, and Noah, son of Lamech, descendant of Seth.

And after everything, after the terrible deal, not a word of repentance?! Each blamed someone else: Eve on the serpent, Adam on God (“this is the wife you gave me”). And, offended, they stepped outside of paradise and drowned in everyday life, never repenting. A son is born, the mother is delighted: “I have acquired a man from the Lord.” But the devil has already put a seal on the son sold to him by Adam and Eve.

Ap. John, who sees incomparably deeper than the unrepentant mother, writes: “Not like Cain, who was of the evil one.”

Christian spouses, know that if you fall into sin and do not repent, becoming silent in church, then the first person born into your family after this may be Fr. Be it a broken life, Down's disease or a bad character, or something else like that, even obsession. Numerous facts confirm the possibility of this in most cases, although there are exceptions.

With such a mark, with such a daring character, the religious Cain makes a sacrifice to God. But God did not look upon her. And not at all because, as they interpret, Abel made a blood sacrifice as a prototype of the sacrifice of Christ.

And Cain is bloodless.

Everyone brought something from what they did. And today we serve the Lord with those in which we are rich, we give to Him from our abilities and capabilities. Whether the Lord will accept or reject our gift depends only on whose stamp appears in our life - the stamp of belonging to the Lord or the devil, to whom we not only give a place, but, at times, give scope at the level of language, thoughts and actions, although we remain religious, like Cain, and even try to do something for God.
