Many Orthodox believers are interested in the question of whether a woman can wear trousers to church. In fairness, it should be noted that often it is the style of clothing that becomes the reluctance to visit the temple. They often try to find answers to the above question in quotes from the Bible. At the same time, many people see them as a clear ban on women wearing trousers. But some people interpret it completely differently.

Do shorts violate religious rules?

Let's try to figure this out together.

Can men wear cropped trousers to church?

In society, since ancient times, there have been certain norms and rules of decency. In many

It is also customary to wear appropriate attire to church. This is a sign of respect for other believers.

Today you can find directly opposite opinions

about the compatibility of a man in short clothes and a religious building.

Different churches and temples have their own traditions, this also applies to clothing.

Some have very strict rules and men wearing shorts are not allowed to enter.

Pros against

Shorts for men are leisure wear. If, when preparing for an official meeting, a person does not wear them in order to comply with the requirements of etiquette, then why can he violate decency when visiting the earthly abode of the Lord? It turns out that secular rules are more important for him than spiritual ones. The Bible describes the meeting of Jesus Christ and the Apostle Peter. The Lord calls him to himself. He cannot approach immediately, as he is half naked in the water on the river bank. Just after getting dressed, Peter goes to fetch the teacher. This is an example of how appropriate clothing shows a person's respect for God. A man in inappropriate attire during prayers can confuse other parishioners with his frivolous appearance, and sometimes even receive comments from them

You should think about whether this is worth attracting attention to yourself and tempting believers.

Why are shorts sometimes seen in church?

  • Many priests can give permission for a man to attend church in shorts, citing the fact that faith and sincerity of the soul are more important than appearance.
  • But you can still understand and accept this form of clothing if a person did not specifically intend to go to the temple, but ended up there.
  • The same applies to newcomers if they are completely unaware of the rules of attending church.
  • There were cases when tourists convinced the ministers that they were not coming to pray, but to get acquainted with the temple as a work of art, so their dress code was not important.

Rules for women

should be dressed modestly in the temple of God

Previously, only men wore trousers. A woman wearing such clothes was considered dissolute and vulgar in many countries.

In the modern world, everything has changed. Pants and shorts are a wardrobe staple for many women.

However, according to religious traditions, they are still considered specifically men's clothing. In addition, the legs remain open. Therefore, if a woman enters church in this form, she is breaking the rules.

Is it possible to bring a child to church in shorts?

There are no special recommendations on how to dress children when going to church.

the child should also look modest.

Age also matters. The classic version of shorts can be worn up to 10 years

If less attention is paid to a little girl or boy, then it is better for teenagers to adhere to generally accepted norms

Tradition

The tradition of the Russian Orthodox Church is based on the fact that any believer must look modest, not attract the gaze of parishioners, not disturb someone else’s prayer and not arouse lust. Therefore, it is better to go to church in women’s clothing below the knees, with a scarf or stole on your head.

Surprisingly, many of yesterday’s lovers of jeans or trousers claim that frequent visits to church change women’s preferences - they become more conservative. One of the abbots of the city of Kazan said very true words: “A woman herself should feel the need to wear a skirt, and there is no need to force her to do this.”

What should girls, girls and women wear when attending church?

The purpose of clothing when visiting a place where people come for spiritual matters is not the same as “in the world.”

There is no need to emphasize the attractiveness of your appearance, attract attention to yourself in any way, etc. - if only because other people come to this place not entirely for the sake of looking at the outfits of those present, and it is highly undesirable to distract them from prayers, thoughts and listening to the service with your flashy appearance

Excessive elegance, and especially sex appeal in the image, is considered bad manners. Both “top” and “bottom” should cover the body, and not effectively reveal it. How long and closed a woman’s outfit should be depends on the denomination and on the severity of the regulations of a particular monastery, cathedral, church, etc. Sometimes you can learn about the required clothing restrictions from information signs at the entrance to the church territory. But often this is not known exactly: for example, if you plan to inspect church architecture on a trip to another city, then you need to dress correctly for church in advance.

The site 6tu4ka.ru suggests remembering the general principles of how a girl should dress for church:

  • The bottom should be a skirt (or you can wear a dress to church). The length is definitely such that the knees are completely covered, but many women go to church services in very long skirts, down to the ankle.
  • The “top” should definitely cover the shoulders and décolleté. Some religious institutions also require covered elbows (for example, some monasteries). Completely covered clothing, not even showing the wrists, neck or ankles, is required only of nuns, and not of ordinary parishioners.
  • Various flashy inscriptions on clothing, translucent fabrics, cuts, etc. are unacceptable. Flashy colors and variegated prints are also undesirable - this is not how you dress for church.
  • For christenings, weddings, and also for large holiday services (Easter, Christmas, etc.), you can dress a little more elegantly than for a regular visit to church. This does not imply greater openness of clothing - but, for example, light colors of fabrics, the permissibility of modest and appropriate trimmings, embroidery, etc.
  • Jewelry and jewelry are definitely inappropriate here. The only exceptions can be a pectoral cross, an amulet, a wedding or engagement ring, and, possibly, very modest and small earrings.
  • The selection of shoes is important. Of course, even in summer, those shoe models that cover the toe and heel are preferable (although, of course, a girl in sandals is unlikely to be asked to leave the temple because of this moment). However, in addition to meeting the standards of decency, shoes must be comfortable - after all, according to the rules of the Orthodox Church, the service (which in some cases lasts for many hours) is listened to while standing. Therefore, although they are not prohibited, it is better not to wear heels.

For a wedding, the bride, of course, needs a wedding dress. It does not have to be white (which distinguishes it from a wedding), but it should be long, covering the shoulders and décolleté. Parents, relatives and friends can attend the wedding ceremony in elegant, but not shocking clothes: for example, ladies can wear dresses with ¾ sleeves and midi length.

How should a woman dress for a christening in church? For a godmother at a christening, a modest light blouse and skirt, or a dress with sleeves, is suitable. But guests at a christening can dress without pretense of elegance, according to the general rules of the church dress code.

A controversial issue is whether it is possible to replace skirts and closed sweaters with improvised items - shawls, pareos, large scarves, etc. On the one hand, tourists often do this when they want to inspect some architectural object of religious significance, and this allows them to solve the problem of the dress code. But on the other hand, for truly believing parishioners who purposefully go to church for spiritual purposes, this is inappropriate - after all, you can immediately dress correctly for church.

What clothes to choose for the temple?

Photo: Flickr.com
It is worth saying that not a single church canon prohibits girls from wearing trousers, but there is still a reminder that clothes for church should be modest and not provocative

A girl who goes to a temple must understand that she is not going there to show off her figure or demonstrate a sense of style, not to attract the attention of men or express individual preferences, but to pray to God. This means, based on the above, you need to choose a skirt or dress for church according to the following principle:

  • the skirt or dress should not be above the knee;
  • clothing should not be tight-fitting;
  • you should refrain from wearing things in bright and catchy colors;
  • if a girl chooses a dress, then the shoulders and neckline should be covered.

If you still have to wear trousers, then it is better to give up jeans and leggings and give preference to strict, straight, non-tight classic pants.

In addition to provocative clothing, girls should not wear bright makeup to church, because they are going to a general prayer, not a party, and you should not forget about this. The more modest the appearance, the better. When choosing clothes for the temple, the main thing is not to forget about the disposition of your spirit, because a person should be determined exclusively to meet God and pray, throwing all the problems and nuances of secular life into the background.

Yes, it is better for girls to go to church in a skirt, but women in trousers are not kicked out either, the main thing is that the person’s intentions are good. Of course, no one will let girls in a swimsuit into church, but modest dress pants are not that scary, an acceptable option, although undesirable.

conclusions

To sum up our thoughts, we can say that in Christianity the issue of choosing clothes should remain on the conscience of the person. Regarding clothing, you can ask questions to the priest, but in any case, the choice: what to wear to church is yours. In my subjective opinion, it is better to wear trousers to church than not to go at all.

Before you wear anything to church, ask yourself a few questions:

  • Is my clothing appropriate for the church?
  • Will my attire cause bad thoughts in the opposite sex?
  • Why am I going to church dressed like this?

Is it possible for girls to wear trousers to church - the position of the clergy

Photo: Flickr.com

Since we live in the modern world, where we have already moved somewhat away from the traditions of the past, no one will kick a girl or woman out of church for not wearing a skirt or trousers. Indeed, it is permissible for girls to wear trousers to church, but it is still better to follow established traditions, the priests say. The rules of the Orthodox faith say that a girl should wear a skirt and not pants, so it is better not to deviate too much from them.

The priests clearly say that even those girls who don’t really like dresses and skirts should still make an exception to attend church. To make this act easier for a girl, she should perceive a skirt as an element of the dress code. You need to understand that if it is not advisable to wear evening dresses and heels for a walk, and a nightgown to work, then pants are not the best option for going to church. Trousers can be worn to work, for a walk, at home or when going shopping, but to church you should dress more modestly, choosing a loose skirt that is not too short.

The fact that a girl will come to church in a skirt is not just a tribute to traditions or the whims of the priests, but, first of all, a respectful attitude towards the holy place, which is the house of God. Of course, if a woman is far from home, does not have the opportunity to change clothes, but wants to go to church to pray or ask questions to the priest, then she can safely go there in trousers.

What not to wear

If you decide to visit a church, you should not wear shorts, jeans, leggings, or short skirts. As described above, trousers are also not advisable. Clothes should not be tight. Even if, according to all the recommendations, your blues has long sleeves and covers the shoulders, but it is made of transparent material, then it also cannot be worn to visit the temple.

You should also avoid bright and strong perfumes. Do not wear sports shoes under any circumstances. Makeup should not be flashy. Lips should not be painted with bright lipstick. It’s better to wear more natural makeup on this day, or even give up makeup altogether.

If you want to visit a church or monastery for the purpose of an excursion or for fun, remember that these are holy places where believers come to turn to God. Therefore, no matter what purpose you visit them for, you need to choose your clothes very carefully.

How should a woman dress in the temple?

The main principle of choosing a girl’s clothes for the temple is modesty and adherence to decency. Women should wear a skirt or dress to church, and the length should be below the knee. The “top” should cover the shoulders and not have a deep neckline. Ideally, elbows should also be covered, but this is not a strict requirement: a dress with short sleeves is quite suitable for going to church in the summer.

How to dress for church in winter should be decided taking into account the fact that in churches, especially large ones, it can be cold, and there is no wardrobe for outerwear. You also have to stand during worship services, often in close quarters among other people. Therefore, you need to dress warmly enough, but avoid bulky, heavy outerwear that will make you tired or overheat. For example, a sheepskin coat or a voluminous fur coat may be uncomfortable. But a coat or jacket will be appropriate for the season.

Don’t forget to think about what exactly you will be wearing under your outerwear - even if you are allowed into the temple in a long coat and jeans underneath, you will not be able to unbutton your coat indoors, because... It is not customary for women to wear trousers in churches.

A separate issue is the headdress. In Orthodox churches, it is required that, ideally, it completely cover the woman's hair. But, of course, they are unlikely to reprimand you if some part of your hair is visible - rather, the symbolism of a covered head is important.

Traditionally, people wear headscarves to church. You can also drape your head with a thin neck scarf, stole or snood thrown over it - this will not be a mistake. In winter, it is allowed not to exchange your usual winter headdress for a scarf - that is, a hat or a hood, but these are rather compromise options in case you find yourself in a church unplanned, or, for example, as a tourist while visiting an architectural monument. But if you are purposefully going to a solemn service (for example, at Christmas), then you should still wear a scarf.

Sometimes questions arise about how a woman should dress for church - how elegant can she look, are any jewelry or decorative accessories appropriate in her look?

The “Beautiful and Successful” website suggests focusing on the reason for visiting the temple - a solemn service, a certain private event (wedding, christening, funeral service, etc.), a Sunday service or just a visit on a weekday.

It is clear that if the reason for visiting church is sad, then clothing should be as modest as possible. It is also not recommended to dress smartly for those services that are held on church holidays with a tragic meaning (for example, Good Friday - the day of Christ’s execution). On ordinary days, you can dress simply casually - without shocking, but also without striving for deliberately dull and old-fashioned things.

But church services on bright holidays (Christmas, Epiphany, Trinity, etc.), on the contrary, have always been considered a reason to wear better and new clothes to church, thereby emphasizing the importance of this day for you. The same is true if you are invited to a christening or wedding: clothing should reflect your joy at the event.

In modern realities, of course, you don’t need to go to church in an evening dress, but you can easily afford things made of bright fabric, with some kind of neutral print or embroidery.

We advise you to study the Ten Commandments of God and their meaning

Of course, clothes still shouldn’t be short, transparent, shiny, etc.

It is also better not to wear jewelry or flashy jewelry: because the only piece of jewelry needed in the temple is a pectoral cross. In addition, a wedding or engagement ring and modest earrings are acceptable.

The opinion of the priests

Despite the fact that there is no strict ban anywhere, many priests adhere to the strict ban on women wearing trousers. They explain why they cannot wear trousers to church by the fact that clothing to some extent dictates certain forms of behavior that may be incompatible with Christian norms.

For example, in a skirt it is not convenient to sit in an untied position, but in trousers it is comfortable. According to the priests, such a change in manner can entail a change not only in behavior, but even in character.

Of course, today there is no strict ban on trousers. But still, if you have the option of wearing other clothes, then it is better to give preference to it. Of course, if you go to church in trousers, no one will kick you out. But be aware that in some churches this may still provoke a conflict.

It should also be noted that this prohibition is taken more seriously in monasteries. You should not visit the monastery in this form of clothing, even as a sightseer.

Women's clothing

Indeed, in Deuteronomy, where Moses gives the Israelites the laws by which they should continue to live, it is written: “A woman must not wear a man’s clothing, and a man must not put on a woman’s clothing, for anyone who does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God” (Deut. 22:5).

The famous interpreter of Old Testament texts, theologian and writer Alexander Lopukhin points out: the goal of Moses and God, who speaks through his mouth, is to preserve the Jewish people from unnatural corruption, that is, from homosexuality, which was common among many pagan peoples of the world. The Bible indicates that this is unacceptable: “You shall not lie with a man as with a woman: it is an abomination” (Leviticus 18:22). There is a version that cross-dressing was also associated with various pagan rituals, when, when praising demons, priests changed into clothes of the opposite sex.

On the other hand, neither in the times of the Old Testament nor in the times of the New Testament did they know about trousers, and even more so, about women’s trousers: both sexes wore mantles of different lengths. Women's mantles were most likely longer and made of soft and thin materials.

The decision of the Sixth Ecumenical Council, which was convened in Constantinople (Constantinople) in the 7th century, is in complete agreement with the Old Testament. On it, the exarchs of the church determined that: “no husband should dress in women’s clothing, nor any wife in clothing characteristic of a husband... ...nor wear comic disguises... ...not proclaim the vile name of Dionysus...”. Here we are also talking, first of all, about same-sex relationships and rituals of worship of pagan gods.

Not a word about trousers

In general, trousers, as an element of men's clothing, became known in the Middle East only during the Crusades, when local peoples saw medieval knights, and in Europe itself, trousers became popular after the invasion of Rome by German barbarian tribes.

Therefore, we will not find any special statements about trousers either from the early Christian saints or from the Christian holy fathers of the Middle Ages, who considered the instructions of the Old Testament and the Council sufficient for women.

The Christian Church's attitude towards trousers

Obviously, if society reacted extremely negatively to changes in women’s wardrobe, then for a long time no one dared to go to church in trousers. Going to church in trousers has become more active in the last decade - a time when society has long recognized trousers as women's clothing.

There are two views on clothing that are present in the church environment:

  1. Clothes are not the main thing, the main thing is the heart. Adherents of this opinion say that if I always wear trousers, why can’t I go to church in them, because by putting on a skirt, I will not become a different person, but will remain myself.
  2. There are mandatory traditions regarding clothing that must be followed in society. For example, we cannot wear a bright festive suit to a funeral - this will offend the feelings of those present, and a girl should go to an Orthodox church and dress appropriately.

These two positions are not without meaning, because in any society, clothing has always symbolized a certain thing - status, position, gender. The modern world, despite the universality of things, still cannot completely bypass this factor.

On the other hand, a long skirt and the correct appearance of a girl in church do not mean anything - this can be pure hypocrisy and hypocrisy. For Christians, the most important thing is to find out what the Bible thinks about this matter.

Old Testament

In the Old Testament, clothing was given a deep meaning. For example, the book of Exodus described strict rules of dress for priests; their bodily nudity must be completely hidden.

For this reason, in those days, the dresses of all people were very closed, literally down to the toes. The dresses of men and women were different, and there was a clear prohibition against a man wearing what a woman wore, and vice versa.

Deuteronomy 22 chapter 5 verse.

These verses are the main reason for the negative attitude towards women's trousers in the church. But many Bible commentators say that this passage in the Bible means that a person, putting on an “alien” dress, wanted to change his gender, and for God such a transformation of personality is an abomination.

New Testament

In the New Testament we find several clear comments by the Apostles on how to dress properly for women. The Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 2:9 says that clothing should be decent, modest

The Apostle Peter 1 Peter 3:1-6 also encourages women to pay attention to their character and soul more than their clothing

1st Peter chapter 3 verses 1 to 6.

The spirit of the first Christians was filled with love for Christ, so the attire of many saints was as simple and modest as possible. In the Gospels, Christ does not regulate or establish canons for Christian clothing. The closer a person is to God, the more deeply he will realize what He likes or not - and the choice to wear trousers or a skirt should remain on the woman’s conscience.

Our days

The rector of the Assumption Church in the city of Krasnogorsk, Archpriest Konstantin Ostrovsky, says that those who want to dress all women in long skirts are mistaken, believing that this is the main thing, but those who consider long skirts something unworthy, ugly and look at “ "skirt girls" with contempt, "For the kingdom of God is not food and drink, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Rom. 14:17).

Archpriest Igor Fomin believes that it is better to enter the temple in jeans and bareheaded than to pass by, but emphasizes that it is much more natural and beautiful when a girl or woman comes to the temple in traditional clothes.

Recently canonized as a saint of the Georgian Orthodox Church, our contemporary Archimandrite Gabriel (Urgebadze) pointed out that a person’s clothing “reveals the state of his soul.” It turns out that jeans on a girl in a temple in this context act as a symbol of rebellion, feminism, which is not pleasing to God, while traditional clothing becomes a sign of humility of the soul, submission to the will of God and striving for perfection.

Surprisingly, over two thousand years, Christianity has not developed a common tradition: exactly how a woman should dress when going to church. In some churches, even infant girls’ heads are covered (ROC), in others, only married women wear a headscarf, in the East, Christian women remain bare-haired to distinguish themselves from Muslim women, and in Greece they calmly go to churches without headscarves and in trousers.

Perhaps the basis for the rejection of trousers can be found in the canons of the Orthodox Church?

In the 62nd rule of the Sixth Ecumenical Council it is actually said: “We determine: no husband shall dress in women’s clothing, nor a wife in clothing characteristic of a husband...”, and then the continuation: “... neither wear comical disguises... when pressing grapes in winepresses, do not proclaim vile named after Dionysus...", etc., etc. It turns out that we are talking about the so-called mummers, and not about ordinary clothes. This entire rule is dedicated to various pagan customs penetrating into the Christian environment.

There is another canonical rule, this time closer to our topic. Rule 13 of the Gangra Local Council reads: “If a certain wife, for the sake of imaginary asceticism, changes her attire, and instead of ordinary women’s clothing, puts on a man’s clothing, let her be under an oath.”

A typical Pharisaic trait is the literal understanding of words spoken in a spiritual sense. Thus, at one time, the commandment “Do not boil a kid in its mother’s milk” (Ex. 23:19) turned into a gastronomic commandment about not eating milk and meat at the same time.

But even if we take the ban on men’s clothing for women literally, what does this have to do with women’s trousers? After all, they are designed, tailored and sewn specifically for women. What kind of men's clothing is this that no man would wear under pain of torture? Trousers have been appearing on women since the beginning of the 20th century, and in the sixties, thanks to Yves Saint Laurent, they finally became women's clothing. Now the definition of “men's clothing” simply does not apply to them.

Modern clothing from Orthodox designers

Thus, we clearly see that nothing is said about trousers as a model of clothing in either the Old or New Testaments. The canonical rules of the Orthodox Church say nothing about trousers, and clothing in general. Finally, the world itself perceives women's trousers as women's clothing. Moreover, in the Church there were cases when women wore really men's clothes, the real ones. For example, St. blzh. Ksenia of Petersburg, or Elder Dositheus of the Kyiv Kitaev Hermitage, who turned out, as they say, to be a woman in disguise, seeking a monastic feat and, thus, hiding from her relatives.

We recommend studying Psalm 124

Did the Church condemn them? Indeed, in both cases one can recall the rule of the Gangra Local Council, which we mentioned. But the Church, instead of condemning, on the contrary, recognized them as saints, because it never accepted either the Old Testament or the canonical rules about clothing in the external sense, as a requirement of fashion and style, but gave it a spiritual meaning.

In the church tradition, as we see, there are no grounds for banning women's trousers.

Don't know how to dress for church? A compromise has been found!

There are four main rules in clothing that any woman should adhere to when going to church. They are very simple and can be followed tastefully.

1. Moral rule. There are 12 commandments in Christianity that must be observed. One of them reads: “Yes, do not tempt your neighbor.”

As you know, any man pays attention to the prominent and beautiful parts of a woman’s body. Coming to church in a low-cut blouse, miniskirt or short shorts means attracting the eyes of all men and seducing them

This will be considered a sin. Too tight dresses, as well as vulgar makeup, can lead to the same result.

2. Aesthetic rule. The Church always encourages any parishioner to be an example for the people around him in everything, including the ability to dress. It would be good to choose simple colors in clothes: light, but not dark or bright. Many saints spoke about this. You should dress smartly but modestly.

3. Trouser rule. Today, trousers are becoming the favorite and comfortable clothing for many women. True, it is still customary to wear a skirt to church. Although, many churches are already turning a blind eye to this. But it is still recommended to come in a skirt that will cover your knees.

4. The headscarf rule. It is not necessary to cover your head with a scarf in church. It should be noted that sometimes it looks ridiculous because it doesn’t fit the suit at all. You can wear a hat, beret, or a beautiful veil, which will emphasize the beauty of a woman’s appearance.

Any woman will be able to take a creative and original approach to choosing her costume for going to church. There are no specific prohibitions here. The main thing is to dress modestly, elegantly, beautifully and be chaste.

Is it possible for a woman to enter the temple in trousers? What the priests say

Trousers in different variations and especially jeans have become so firmly established in the wardrobe of a modern woman that she cannot imagine her life without them. Because this life has become mobile: you have to keep up everywhere, what you don’t know - learn, what you don’t know - master and at the same time realize yourself as much as possible everywhere. With such a fast paced and comprehensive modern life, there remains a strong demand for comfortable and functional clothing. As they say, you can’t do without pants here. But there are places where wearing trousers is not encouraged. For example, a temple of art, that is, a theater. Wearing jeans is not allowed into decent theaters, so that you don’t ruin the festive atmosphere and the magic of the theater with your businesslike and everyday appearance. But this ban does not apply to an elegant trouser suit. Some reputable companies and corporations have also introduced a dress code for their employees that excludes trousers and jeans. But sometimes they make concessions and even exceptions.

There is another place where previously it was strictly forbidden to enter in trousers. This is a temple. But today ministers of worship are also not so categorical, and if a parishioner enters church in trousers, no one will drive her away, the main thing is that her head is covered with a scarf. If, for example, you can enter a Catholic church without a scarf, then for an Orthodox church a scarf on the head is a must.

As it was said in the film “17 Moments of Spring”: “It is difficult for a shepherd to go against the flock.” No matter how much we call people to a God-like existence, parishioners have their own character and are self-willed. If the clergy kick out all women wearing trousers from the temple, then almost no one will remain. It should be remembered that trousers can be different: some are modest, and some are not modest.

Of course, it is better to wear a skirt to communion, because communion is a sacrament, people prepare for it and think through their wardrobe in advance.

By the way, there is not a word in any of the church canons about wearing trousers. There is a strict prohibition on wearing clothes traditionally belonging to the other sex. That is, we are not talking about a wardrobe, but about positioning a person by gender through certain items of clothing. Here's what the Bible says about it:

A woman should not wear men's clothing, and a man should not dress in women's clothing, for anyone who does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God.

But times have changed, and priests are forced to make concessions to their flock. Therefore, you can go to the temple in trousers. Most importantly, don’t forget to put a scarf over your head. Even if you forgot to take a scarf from home, any temple will offer you a scarf or scarf (there is one for such a case).

Biblical covenants

What does the Bible say? It turns out that there are no words about trousers there either. The Apostle Paul, for example, advises Christian women to be more concerned about good deeds and intentions than about dressing. This means that a pious woman in jeans is much more righteous than a lady wearing a floor-length dress, but is envious and selfish. The Apostle Paul also mentions “decent clothing” - it is this phrase that parishioners who care about Orthodox fashion most often cling to. But decency changes over time. An outfit that would have been considered decent at the time the Gospel was written can no longer be called such. And, on the other hand, modern “Orthodox” dresses would also hardly have been popular a couple of thousand years ago.

So that wives, too, in decent attire, with modesty and chastity, adorn themselves not with braided hair, not with gold, not with pearls, not with costly clothing, but with good deeds, as befits women devoting themselves to piety.

Apostle Paul, Timothy 2:9–10

https://nehemiah.ru/aktualno/item/117-chto-govorit-bibliya-o-zhenskoj-odezhde

Often, lovers of Orthodox skirts also refer to the Old Testament, which states that a woman cannot dress in men’s clothing, and a man cannot dress in women’s clothing. But again, not a word about trousers! Moreover, in those days, men also wore skirts and dresses, just of a different cut. And trousers did not appear in the wardrobes of ordinary people until the end of the Middle Ages. So in modern realities, we are talking more about clothes from the men's department in the store, rather than about jeans and pants.
