In Church Slavonic

1 About him who inherits, a psalm to David

2 Command my words, O Lord, understand my calling.

3 Hear the voice of my prayer, my King and my God, as I will pray to You, O Lord.

4 Tomorrow hear my voice, tomorrow I will appear to You, and you will see me.

5 For You are God, who do not will iniquity; the wicked one will not dwell in You,

6 Below shall the wicked abide before thy eyes: thou hast hated all the workers of iniquity.

7 Destroy all those who speak lies: the Lord abhors men of blood and flattery.

8 But through the multitude of Thy mercy, I will go into Thy house, and worship Thy holy temple, in Thy fear.

9 Lord, guide me in Your righteousness; for my sake, my enemy, straighten my path before You.

10 Because truth is not in their mouth, their heart is futile, their grave is open, their throat is open; their tongues are flattering.

11 Judge unto them, O God, that they may depart from their thoughts; because of the multitude of their wickedness, I despise them, for I have made Thee so bitter, O Lord.

12 And let all who trust in You rejoice, they will rejoice forever, and may they dwell in them and glory in You, those who love Your name.

13 For thou hast blessed the righteous, O Lord: for thou hast crowned us with weapons of favor.

1 About the successor. Psalm of David.

2 Hear, O Lord, my words, understand my thoughts.

3 Hear the voice of my cry, my King and my God! for I pray to You.

4 Lord! early hear my voice, early I will appear before You and wait,

5 For You are a God who does not love iniquity; The evil one will not dwell with You;

6 The wicked will not abide in Your sight: You hate all the workers of iniquity.

7 You will destroy those who speak lies; The Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and treacherous.

8 And I, according to the abundance of Your mercy, will enter Your house, I will worship Your holy temple in Your fear.

9 Lord! guide me in Your righteousness, for the sake of my enemies; level your path before me.

10 For there is no truth in their mouth: their heart is destruction, their throat is an open grave, they flatter with their tongue.

11 Condemn them, O God, that they may fall by their own devices; Because of the multitude of their wickedness, cast them away, for they have rebelled against You.

12 And let all those who trust in You rejoice, they will rejoice forever, and You may dwell in them, and those who love Your name will boast in You.

13 For you bless the righteous, O Lord; You crown him with favor like a shield.

Bible. Psalter

Psalm 108

To the head of the choir. Psalm of David.

1 God of my praise! don't be silent,

2 For wicked lips and deceitful lips have been opened against me; They speak to me with a lying tongue;

3 They surround me with words of hatred everywhere, they take up arms against me without reason;

4 For my love they fight against me, but I pray;

5 They repay me for my good with evil, for my love with hatred.

6 Set the wicked over him, and let the devil stand at his right hand.

7 When he is tried, let him come out guilty, and let his prayer become sin;

8 Let his days be short, and let another take his dignity;

9 Let his children be orphans, and his wife a widow;

10 Let his children wander and beg and ask for bread from their ruins;

11 Let the lender seize all that he has, and let strangers plunder his labor;

12 Let there be no one who has compassion on him, and no one who has mercy on his orphans;

13 Let his descendants be destroyed, and let their name be blotted out in the next generation;

14 Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the Lord, and the sin of his mother not be blotted out;

15 May they always be in the sight of the Lord, and may He blot out their memory from the earth,

16 because he did not think to show mercy, but pursued a poor and needy and broken-hearted man, in order to put him to death;

17 He loved the curse, and it will come upon him; he did not want the blessing, and it will move away from him;

18 Let him be clothed with the curse as with a robe, and let it enter like water into his bowels, and like oil into his bones;

19 Let it be to him as a garment with which he is clothed, and as a girdle with which he is always encircled.

20 This is the reward from the Lord for my enemies and for those who speak evil against my soul!

21 But with me, O Lord, Lord, do for Thy name's sake, for Thy lovingkindness is good; save me,

22 For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.

23 I disappear like a retreating shadow; they drive me away like a locust.

24 My knees are weak from fasting, and my body has lost its fatness.

25 I have become a laughingstock to them: when they see me, they nod their heads.

26 Help me, O Lord my God, save me according to Your mercy,

27 Let them know that this is Your hand, and that You, O Lord, have done this.

28 They curse, but You bless; they rebel, but let them be put to shame; Let Your servant rejoice.

29 Let my adversaries be clothed with dishonor, and be covered with their shame as with a garment.

30 And I will loudly praise the Lord with my mouth and glorify Him among the multitude,

31 For He stands at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those who judge his soul.

History of writing

During the reign of King David, betrayals and wars often occurred. Quiet days were very rare. But even when he was not in power, David was subjected to persecution and numerous trials. And the text of Psalm 5 is David’s promise to the Lord. And he promises to always believe in him, to be a follower, and not to give up his faith.

Psalm 8

The eighth psalm expresses gratitude to the Creator for creating man, giving him land, water and the opportunity to dominate nature and animals.

Psalm 8 interpretation

  • “Finger” - from Straslavic “finger”. This word is used to show the power and greatness of the Creator.
  • “On the moon and stars that You have placed... that is
    , that You remember him (Ps. 8.5) - this means that everything in nature was created by God, including man himself.
  • “He put everything under his feet” - God gave man a whole planet, water and land, birds, fish and animals.
  • “He made him ruler” - and gave him the right to rule over this planet.
  • “Lord, our God” - despite the beautiful nature of man, he is still lower than the Almighty.
  • “How majestic is Your name” - David shows respect for God.

Interpretation of Psalm 5

The text of the song of praise carries a similar interpretation:

Verses 1-7: The author addresses the Lord. The king shows the righteous how to exalt the Most High. The Lord always hears us and will help us if our faith is true. David begins his day every morning with prayer, thanking the Lord for everything. There is no need to demand anything special from the Lord; He himself understands and knows what to do.

Verses 8-13: There are descriptions of the Jewish people, the very life of the author. After all, David’s fate was full of dangers and difficulties, but the Lord never abandoned him. The king's prayers are always heard. Despite the fact that David has sins, he repents. He knows he deserves to be punished. Never asks for the death of his enemies. The Lord himself can decide their destinies.

Psalm 1

The first psalm is read to strengthen faith, about the prosperous life of church-going believers and the salvation of their souls.

Psalm 1 interpretation

  • “Blessed” means happy, has earthly and spiritual well-being.
  • “Husband” means not only a man, but a person in general.
  • “Wicked” - one who does not accept God, or who follows his own feelings.
  • “Sinner” - commits bad deeds contrary to God's laws.
  • “The Corrupter” is the one who incites and tempts to commit sins.
  • “The law of the Lord is his will” - it says about the righteousness and goodness of man.
  • “Will” - in this context, desires and choices.
  • “And he will be like a tree planted by streams of water” - he will be full of grace and strength given from above.
  • “Which bears its fruit in its season, and whose leaf does not wither” - everything will work out, spiritually and physically unharmed, since God will become its patron.
  • “Not so” - those who rebel against God and sow evil.
  • “They are right, blown by the wind” - i.e. wicked people will not obtain soul salvation.
  • “The Lord “knows” - loves, protects, knows everything about us.
  • “Path” - idea, intentions, actions, direction.

Interpretation

The song of thanksgiving was written to praise God after He delivered the people from a difficult trial. Psalm 29 should be understood as the confession of the sinner and his sincere repentance.

To interpret Psalm 29, you should look at each verse:

  • Verses 1 - David's gratitude for deliverance from enemies and troubles, a promise to praise and glorify the Lord, which follows in further verses.
  • Verses 2-3 – the psalmist gives thanks for the salvation and preservation of soul and body. Not only diseases, but also attacks from pagan neighbors caused many troubles to the Israelites.
  • Verse 4 – David calls for praising the Lord and preaching faith in Him.
  • Verse 5-9 - the king repents of his crime, considers all troubles a punishment for his rejoicing and appropriation of God's merits. Only the mercy of the Lord brings true peace, it erases all adversity and is worth all trials.
  • Verses 10-12 are the praise of the Lord, an expression of joy at the mercy that has descended, which delivered us from misfortunes and brought the long-awaited peace. David's promise to glorify God forever.

The story of the fall of King David

While walking, David saw a woman named Bathsheba, whom he desired. It should be noted that in those days it was allowed to maintain a harem, and the king already had quite a lot of wives. The beauty's husband was at war and was an obstacle to what the Anointed One had planned. He summoned Uriah (her husband) to the palace, and handed a letter to one of his military commanders with instructions: to send the submitter of the paper to the most dangerous area, where he would most likely be killed.

And so it happened. Uriah soon died, and his wife became free. David married her. A child was born. No one knew about the ins and outs of the act. The king himself did not see anything reprehensible in his affairs. He did not break any laws, he complied with all the requirements of piety. A year has passed. The prophet Nathan came to him to reveal a lie. The denunciation began with an allegory.

Psalm song. On the Sabbath day.

It is good to confess the Lord and sing to Your name, O Most High, To proclaim Your mercy in the morning and Your truth every night, On a ten-stringed psalter, with singing, on the harp. For You, Lord, have made me glad with Your creation, and I will admire the works of Your hands. How majestic are Your works, O Lord! Wonderfully deep are Your thoughts! A foolish man will not know, and a foolish man will not understand this. While sinners have grown like grass, and all the workers of iniquity have appeared to disappear forever and ever, You are the Most High forever, O Lord! For behold, your enemies, O Lord, for behold, your enemies will perish, and all the workers of iniquity will be scattered, and my horn will be exalted like a unicorn, and my old age will be anointed with fat oil. And my eye will look at my enemies, and my ear will hear about the evil ones who rise up against me. The righteous will flourish like the date and multiply like the cedar in Lebanon. Planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God, They will multiply in an honest old age and will be blessed. Let them proclaim that the Lord our God is righteous and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

Song of praise of David. When the house was being built, after the captivity. Not inscribed among the Jews.

Sing a new song to the Lord, sing to the Lord, all the earth! Sing to the Lord, bless His name, preach His salvation daily. Proclaim His glory among the nations, His wonders among all nations. For the Lord is great and very glorious, terrible to all gods. For all the gods of the pagans are demons, but the Lord created the heavens. Confession and beauty are before Him, holiness and splendor are in His sanctuary. Bring to the Lord, fatherland of the nations, give glory and honor to the Lord! Give glory to the Lord to His name, take sacrifices and enter into His courts. Worship the Lord in His holy court. May the whole earth move at His presence! Tell the nations that the Lord reigns and establishes the universe, which does not move, and He will judge the nations in righteousness. Let the heavens rejoice and let the earth rejoice, let the sea move and what fills it! The fields and everything in them will rejoice, then all the trees of the grove will rejoice at the presence of the Lord, for He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth, to judge the world in righteousness and the nations in His truth.
