Reverence
His Holiness Eustathius is revered by Catholics and Orthodox Christians. In the Middle Ages, at the place where Placidus met the deer near the Roman city of Tivoli, the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built on the Vulturella rock. There is still an ancient temple in Rome in honor of St. Eustathius, built in the 7th century.
In honor of the saint, a festive church service is held annually in churches on September 20 (October 3). Celebrations to commemorate Eustathius were held in churches in Rome as early as the 7th century. In Catholicism, a saint is part of the holiest group of fourteen holy helpers. During the Middle Ages, Eustathius was considered the patron saint of hunters and foresters. The saint was revered in many countries of Central Europe. Eustathius was the patron saint of Madrid.
Orthodox Christians also considered Placidus their saint. The Ertatsminda Church in Georgia was built in his honor. Eustathius was considered the patron of the Georgian king Luarsab II and the commander Saakadze, who defeated the Turks in the 17th century.
In Rus', Plakida was considered a warrior-great martyr, a royal saint. In Nestor’s “Reading about Boris and Gleb” there is a mention of Eustathia. The baptist of Rus', Vladimir, is compared with this saint. The prince, like the Roman governor, was not afraid of the pagans and took the side of the Savior. The name Eustathius was even given to the son of Mstislav of Chernigov (grandson of Prince Vladimir).
