“The voice of one crying in the wilderness”: the meaning of the phraseological unit, its origin

The voice of one crying in the wilderness is a call for something that remains unheeded. Unanswered appeal, appeal. A futile plea, a request. The phraseological unit owes its origin to the Old Testament: the Book of the Jewish prophet Yeshayahu (Isaiah) (born around 765 BC), created approximately in the period 778 - 732 BC. In the canonical Bible, the Book of Isaiah is number 23.

Comfort, comfort my people, says your God; speak to the heart of Jerusalem and proclaim to it that the time of its struggle is fulfilled, that satisfaction has been made for its iniquities, for it has received double for all its sins from the hand of the Lord. The voice of one crying: in the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord , make straight in the desert the paths of our God; Let every valley be filled, and every mountain and hill be made low, the crooked places made straight, and the rough paths made smooth; and the glory of the Lord will appear, and all flesh will see (the salvation of God); for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it (Isaiah 40:3)

It is clear that the words of the Prophet are being reproduced incorrectly. Isaiah says, “The voice of one crying: in the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord.” But later the colon disappeared and the result was a single phrase, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness,” which has nothing to do with the source and meaning of the statement. The first apostles, the disciples and followers of Jesus Christ, already committed inattention.

  • Matthew “He said: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: make straight the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said” (3, 3)
  • Mark “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight” (1, 3)
  • John “The prophet Isaiah spoke about him: “A voice is heard in the wilderness, crying: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make a straight path for Him” (1:23)

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness”: the meaning of phraseology

In the explanatory dictionary of S.I. Ozhegov the following definition of this expression is given: “an unanswered call, an unheard plea.” There is a stylistic mark “bookish”.

The phraseological dictionary edited by M. I. Stepanova provides the following interpretation of the expression: “a passionate call for something that remains unanswered due to people’s indifference or misunderstanding.” Also marked “book”.

In the dictionary of stable phrases T.V. Rose also has a definition of the expression “a voice crying in the wilderness.” The meaning of phraseological units in it concerns useless calls that remain unheeded.

Next, let's look at how this combination of words appeared.

Interpretation of the meaning

The original text of the parable contains deep meaning. John the Baptist not only persuaded the Israelites to open up to God, he metaphorically explained that accepting faith was possible only after diligent work on one’s own spirit.

When the prophet spoke about the lowered mountains, he meant the pacification of pride, because having gotten rid of this sin, a person becomes one step closer to the Almighty. Filled valleys symbolize the human spirit that has found faith. Crooked roads, while observing the Laws of God, must necessarily become smooth and even.

Some researchers argue that the punctuation was incorrectly used in the phrase, and the following option should be considered correct: “The voice of one crying: in the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord...”.

Origin of the expression “voice crying in the wilderness”

For an etymological review, we will also use the dictionaries we have indicated. The explanatory notes that the expression came from the Gospel parable about John the Baptist, who in the desert, in front of a people who did not understand him, called to open the ways and souls of Jesus Christ.

Rose T.V. also gives the history of the origin of phraseological units in his dictionary. She tells readers the following.

There is a biblical story about a Hebrew prophet who called the Israelis from the desert to prepare for a meeting with God. To do this, he writes in his dictionary to Rose T.V., he proposed to lay roads in the steppe, lower mountains, level the surface of the earth and do many other works. But the hermit prophet was not heard.

From that moment on, the phrase “a voice crying in the wilderness” has the same meaning as vain persuasion and appeals that are not taken seriously by anyone.

Origin of the phrase

Researchers attribute the authorship of these words to the biblical prophet Yeshayahu, originally from Jerusalem, who lived in the 7th century BC. The Book of Isaiah, which is part of the Old Testament, contains the parable of John the Baptist, dated 778-732. BC e. It talks about the Baptist calling non-believers to turn to the Savior and open their hearts and souls to Him.

He persuaded the Israelis to prepare for a meeting with the Lord: to create roads in the middle of the desert, reduce the mountains, level the highway, but the people of Israel did not listen to the hermit. Today, the modern interpretation of a phraseological unit means passionate, however, ineffectual appeals to something.

Biblical meaning of phraseology

The definitions given in dictionaries are not entirely correct. The biblical meaning of this expression is different. John the Baptist called for repentance. His voice (voice) was heard on the banks of the Jordan. People who heard him spread the word about him, and others came to listen to him. Crowds gathered around him. John baptized people with Jordan water to wash them from their sins and preached.

The path of Jesus was paved through human hearts that were made of stone and harbored snakes within them. It was difficult for Christ to walk on such a road. Therefore, the angel of God John prepared this path and tried to make it straight. He corrected the crookedness of people's hearts. Therefore, the expression we are considering should also be interpreted as a call to repentance and correction.

Prophet Isaiah

Born in Jerusalem.
Came from a noble family. He began to prophesy at the age of 20 with a vision of the God of Hosts on the throne and angels surrounding him. The ideas of social justice and universal equality occupy a central place in Isaiah's prophecies. He argued that morality is more pleasing to God than unspiritual, literal observance of the cult. “Why do I need the multitude of your sacrifices? - says the Lord. - I am satisfied with the burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fattened cattle... stop doing evil, learn to do good; seek truth: save the oppressed; protect the orphan; intercede for the widow” (Isa. 1:11, 16–17). Isaiah criticizes the powers that be for their cruelty, greed, and unrighteous lifestyle. Isaiah was the first Jewish prophet to go beyond national boundaries and call for the implementation of God's words and His commandments on a global scale. “...And He will judge the nations and rebuke many nations; And they will beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more" (Isa. 2:2-4)

Use

The expression we are considering is not outdated. It was and is actively used by writers, publicists, journalists and all those who resort to stable expressions to express their thoughts.

N.P. Ogarev in the preface to the periodical “The Bell” by Herzen writes: “the voice of one crying in the desert was heard alone in a foreign land.” This newspaper was published in London and was directed against censorship and serfdom. The stable expression used by Ogarev, which we are considering, succinctly conveyed the author’s thoughts.

The phrase “a voice crying in the wilderness” is often used in headlines. The meaning of phraseology helps convey to readers the information that someone cannot reach someone’s hearts and does not find the desired response.

The use of phraseological units today

People quite often supplement their speech with this biblical expression. Writers, writers and journalists love to use it. A striking example is the phrase of the Russian poet Nikolai Platonovich Ogarev: “The voice of one crying in the desert was heard alone in a foreign land.” The poem was published by the London newspaper The Bell. It was published as an instrument of the struggle against serfdom and the abolition of censorship. It is this expression that conveys the whole meaning of the lines written by Ogarev.

Vladimir Ilyich Lenin also used biblical words, who said: “Of course, these cautious and deliberately ambiguous wishes have still remained “the voice of one crying in the wilderness.”

The original text of the parable is fraught with deep meaning

You can also find the expression in Saltykov-Shchedrin, Sheller-Mikhailov and other Russian classics. Often evangelical phraseology can be seen on the front pages of periodicals. As a headline, it draws readers' attention to a pressing issue that is not getting any response.

Having learned the deep meaning of the biblical catchphrase, you already understand its meaning differently. Often the words relate to the speaker himself, because Jesus can touch everyone’s soul, and it is important that it be filled with faith.

So at least call her from now on:

"Voice in the wilderness".

THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE DESERT, OR “FOOL, I WARNED YOU!”

Voice in the wilderness!" - this is perhaps the most accurate definition of what I will outline below. This, if you like, is my revelation. My desperate attempt to reach the consciousness of people, because in the near future we will face the most difficult trials and huge losses!

STORY ONE

On January 5, 1975, I flew to Khabarovsk, where I first met my cousin Anatoly Senterev. That's probably why we couldn't talk enough. At the very end of the conversation, my brother, as they would say now, for fun, told an unusual story. On November 10, 1974, he decided to take a nondescript old man with a large suitcase from the railway station. When I brought it to the specified address, it turned out that “God’s dandelion” would have to drag his suitcase to the fifth floor. I decided to help. He carried it to the door, said goodbye, and was about to run down the steps... when suddenly he heard: “Come in for some tea... you won’t regret it...” He returned. I came in. And over tea I heard the following from my grandfather: “Remember, son, in exactly eight years Brezhnev will die, and at the end of 1991 the Soviet Union will collapse. A lot of blood will be shed, but many more people will die quietly... unnoticed by others. The country's wealth will be stolen."

Already on Sakhalin, working as the head of the control and audit department of the Tomarinsky Rybkoop, I received partial confirmation of what the Khabarovsk seer predicted. And this happened on August 19, 1976 in the building of the city people's court. A 19-year-old thief was tried for breaking into a fishmonger's cafe and stealing 12 rubles and kopecks from the cash register. By the way, he received two years in prison for this. So, when the judge gave him the last word, he stood up and, unexpectedly for everyone, said: “Remember! In exactly 15 years, Soviet power will collapse like a rotten tree.” And he sat down. Everyone in the hall smiled. Someone, apparently, thought that the thief decided to pretend to be political... Then everyone was sure that Soviet power was for centuries! But time has confirmed his, perhaps accidental, prediction. In November 1982, I was already working in Yamal, where I heard a radio message about Brezhnev’s death. At first I didn’t remember the old man’s prophecy. It came a little later. Moreover, it came in the form of a severe shock! I even had a desire to immediately go to the local KGB and report the future collapse of the Union. I called Lieutenant Colonel Khudyshkin, arranged a meeting with him and... on the way, thanks to the cold November wind, I realized in time that I could end up (at best!) in a stupid situation, and at worst - in a “psychiatric hospital.” But he still met with Khudyshkin, although he told him about the prophecy in a vague, allegorical form. At the same time, he added that the enemies of our country live inside it. These people occupy leadership positions! It is they who will destroy the state and plunder it. By the way, regarding those old prophetic words: “...much more people will die quietly... unnoticed by others.” I can say that this prediction of his was completely confirmed. In the period from 1992 to 2000, the phenomenon of excess mortality was recorded in Russia! , 11.2 million died . The country has NEVER suffered such human losses! And the people DIDN’T NOTICE IT! The means of Mass Fooling simply did not inform him about this!

Thus, the incident with the old seer became a very important life lesson for me. By the way, the ancient sages warned: “Whoever does not look far will face near troubles!” There is something to think about for all our citizens! Although the blindness and deafness that Russians demonstrate cannot be explained by me! Maybe Ilya Ilf is right when he claims that Russia is a country of unafraid idiots! It must be said that the late academician D.S. Lvov. left his answer to the topical question I identified about blindness and deafness: “The people ,” in his opinion, “ are developing a monstrous adaptive reaction to what is seemingly impossible to bear—the syndrome of getting used to a catastrophe.”

STORY TWO

From the age of three or four I knew that I would become a writer, naturally, without understanding the meaning of this word. But every now and then it kept popping into my head: “You will be a writer.” Moreover, I started playing writer! I took a blank notebook, scissors, a needle and thread and made small books, which I filled with wavy lines (I didn’t know how to write), and then put them on a bookcase. So I “composed” 10 or 12 books. To this I can add that I am not alone. There are writers, artists and scientists who, from childhood (in some unknown way!) knew who they would be in the future. But that's not all! In August 1982, I learned from a clairvoyant from the city of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, Emilia Anastasyevna Bryantseva, that I was to become a famous writer, she even said this: “Drums for you will thunder throughout the country!” In 1993, I published a book, “Wait for Me at Dawn,” where I decided to reveal this prediction. 25 years have passed since then. I have 10 books to my credit. I took part in dozens of TV shows on many TV channels. But, apparently, the “drums” are still ahead. Most likely, my greatest fame will come from both the discovery of the “Okunevsky phenomenon” and the discovery... of treating cancer with the water of Lake Danilovo, since I was able to give a scientific explanation of how this unique miracle water heals not only cancer patients, but also many other sick people and those suffering from numerous diseases, sometimes “incurable” by medicine. But there is no reason to be particularly happy, since this discovery, alas, will not really please the “great” oncologists, who make their dirty money on the mountain of cancer patients. I am sure that they will do everything to discredit this discovery. But the flow of cancer patients has already reached Danilovo. And it is unlikely that it will be possible to stop him. Patients (in a few days and weeks!) get rid of severe diseases that the luminaries of medicine could not cope with! But the main thing, perhaps, is something else! I (by my own example) was convinced that our future is already reflected in certain heavenly tablets, but at the same time, we have the opportunity to make our own psychophysical corrections, achieving a positive or, conversely, negative effect. Our outstanding astrophysicist N.A. Kozyrev experimentally proved that the future already exists, but it is as if blurred, unformed... Later, a group of scientists led by Academician M.M. Lavrentiev, repeating Kozyrev’s experiments, confirmed his sensational conclusions. By the way, the great seer Edgar Cayce in one of his famous “readings” said the following: “The future is not something frozen and predetermined. No, it is a series of probabilities and possibilities leading from one to the other. From this point of view, human “destiny” is determined only by how a person uses his free will in relation to the huge amount of data received and all the information available.” So, in order for our future to acquire clearer (positive!) forms, people, united, through collective mental influence on the structure of time (and, according to Casey, it is multivariable!) must form a stable psychophysical field, which the ancients called an egregor. Let me once again remind you of the warning of the ancients: “Whoever does not look far, near troubles await him!” But there are others... Here is the famous quatrain of Nostradamus:

At random, with a crazy head, Clogged with lies of all sorts of “isms”, Guided only by selfishness, The human race is walking into the abyss...

And as an illustration of this quatrain, we can offer a painting by Pieter Bruegel, which depicts blind men wandering towards the abyss.

Let's return to the great seer Edgar Cayce. I want to especially emphasize that he was a conductor between the spiritual world and ours. And this is what was conveyed by the higher ones through him: “The state of the planet is determined by the nature of human activity, since the human spirit and the elements are closely interconnected and constantly interact. Large human masses are capable of powerfully influencing the planet, causing a response in it that is consonant with the tonality of the impact.”

But let's continue! On February 15 of this year, the Chelyabinsk meteorite (fireball) fell, causing a lot of noise. The country is in turmoil. Hundreds of victims, etc. And in my book “Okunevsky Ark”, published in 2003 by the AiF-Print publishing house, in the chapter “Attention: asteroid danger!” there are the following lines: “On March 8, 2002, at an extremely dangerous distance from the Earth - 460 thousand kilometers - a “pebble” with a diameter of 300 meters rushed by, and it was noticed only after it had moved away from our planet at a decent distance. A little more than two months pass, and on June 14, 2002, like a bullet to the temple, a new cosmic “boulder” slips past the Earth (120 thousand kilometers away!). And again they were able to detect him only on the flight. One gets the impression that the asteroids are being targeted, and there’s no chance that the next wandering block will find its target!”

And so... I found it!

But this is the first “swallow”, alas... On February 16, another space tramp rushed past the Earth (almost on the verge of grinding!)! An asteroid the size of a 15-story building flew below the Earth's geostationary satellites, at an altitude of only 27.7 thousand kilometers. The “shooting” continues! The Siberian seer Kasyan was sure that the “ninth cosmic impact” would fall on Siberia, although it would not bring much trouble to Siberia. It is too big... There is a high probability that all this will happen before the end of 2021! But the danger to humanity comes not only from asteroids!

In my book “Will Siberia Save Humanity?!”, published in August 2004, I warned: “...Before the end of 2004, events may well occur that will make one believe in what many scientists in the world have warned about, and then everything will depend on what actions will be taken by all of humanity or part of it. You just need to remember that these actions will have to be taken in extremely extreme conditions, when the time before the tragic outcome will shrink like shagreen leather .” And on December 26, 2004, a tsunami struck in Southeast Asia, which killed 230 thousand people! And on January 12, 2010, at a press conference at the Central House of Justice, I warned about a series of super-destructive earthquakes that would shake the continents. And already on January 13th the world learned about the Haitian earthquake, which claimed 230 thousand lives! Then there was an (even more powerful!) Chilean earthquake... Then a Japanese earthquake with a powerful tsunami, which claimed about 16,000 lives. In July 2010, I warned that from July 25 a catastrophic situation would develop in the European part of Russia. The reason is abnormal heat! That's exactly what happened! No, I do not have any prophetic abilities. Everything described above is the result of the analysis! If I’m not convinced, then I can add to this a warning from the world’s scientists.

On November 18, 1992, in Rio de Janeiro, more than 1,600 of the world's leading scientists, including scientists from 71 countries, including more than half of all living Nobel Prize laureates, issued a dire warning: “Human society and nature have entered a state of contradiction . Human activities cause enormous and often irreparable damage to the environment and vital resources. If left unchecked, many of our daily activities will seriously jeopardize the future we want for the human and animal kingdoms, and could change the living world so much that it will no longer be able to support life as we know it. we know. Urgent fundamental changes are needed if we are to avoid the collisions that our current course may lead to.” This document further lists the most critical situations: pollution of waters, oceans, soil, atmosphere, extinction of plants and animals and overpopulation of the planet with people. It ends with a stark statement: “We are decades away from the chance to avert the threats we now face will be lost and the prospects for humanity will be diminished immeasurably... Fundamental changes are needed in our service to the Earth and life on it if we are to avoid huge human suffering and irreparable damage to our common home on this planet.”

But back in the 30s of the last century, Edgar Cayce warned about the movement of the magnetic poles (it is already observed and is of particular concern to scientists), and that Japan and the Western part of the United States would plunge into the ocean , and residents of Europe should be wary of volcanic eruptions , as a result of which the relief of some areas will change (Vesuvius volcano is already threatening a new catastrophic eruption, and our Elbrus volcano may yet wake up). As for the climate, it (according to Casey) will change quite dramatically, and this phenomenon will affect almost all continents of our planet. By the way, Casey and other seers warned that salvation could only be in the countryside, while cities would become traps for distraught people. And here is Vanga’s prophecy: “More and more often you will meet people who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear. Brother will go against brother, mothers will abandon their children. Everyone will look for a way to escape alone. Some - a handful of them - will become rich, but the people will become poor, and the further they go, the worse. Many diseases will appear, people will begin to die out like flies...”

To this we can add that the science fiction writer Herbert Wells, who had the gift of foresight, tried many times to warn the rulers of the states with whom he met about a variety of impending tragic events, but no one wanted to listen to him. There was complete deafness! Then he exclaimed in his hearts: “You fool, I warned you! Damn you!” Noah, Cassandra, Ragno Nero, E. Casey, Vanga and other seers tried to warn their contemporaries in the same way, but people always remained deaf, as if they had been deprived of their minds.

What will happen in the coming years?

First of all, US President Trump will be assassinated! By the way, actually on the 44th, not the 45th.

Japan and the West Coast of the United States will begin to sink into the ocean. Later, Europe (initially Northern) will go under water.

This global catastrophe is reflected in more detail on this website.

The safest place on Earth, according to the prophecies of Edgar Cayce, Babaji and other seers, will be the region of the southern part of Western Siberia.

The great Indian seer Babaji predicted that the area between the Tara and Om rivers would not suffer from a disaster. And in fact it will turn into a kind of land-based Ark of Humanity. From here the revival of earthly civilization will begin. Muscovites, St. Petersburg residents and people from other cities have already begun to move here...

Remember: “People die not from disasters, but from being unprepared for them .

Mikhail Rechkin — 06.12.2018

Comment by M. Rechkin:

Back in 1997, the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences published an atlas of snow and ice resources of the world, which also considered a hypothetical option: what would the world look like if all the ice on the planet melted? “The total volume of ice on Earth is 26 million cubic meters. This is about 2% of the earth’s water,” says the deputy. Director of the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences, glaciologist Nikolai Osokin. — The main masses of ice are concentrated in Antarctica and Greenland. If we assume that all the ice melts (I’ll make a reservation that science is not even considering the scenario of such a catastrophe), the level of the World Ocean will rise by 64 meters.” Many coastal areas will be flooded. This is the east coast of the USA and a significant part of California, the Netherlands, and part of Denmark. New York, New Orleans, London, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Cairo, Buenos Aires, St. Petersburg will be under water. In addition to the Northern capital, part of the Kola Peninsula and a fairly large territory in Western Siberia - the Yamal Peninsula and lands to the south - will be under water in Russia.

My comment:

Yes, the northern part of Western Siberia, according to the prophecy of Edgar Cayce, will go under water. But the area located between the Tara, Omyu and Irtysh rivers will turn into a kind of land ark of humanity. This is what the great Indian seer Babaji predicted.

Comment by M. Rechkin:

I quote: “Experts from the University of Hawaii argue that due to global warming and climate change, the inhabitants of the Earth will face many problems at once by the end of this century. For example, New Yorkers will have to deal with intense rainfall, as well as a noticeable increase in temperature and sea level.”

My comment:

These would-be specialists are complete idiots! New York will disappear from the face of the planet by 2030! And besides it, up to 80% of the world's megacities are located in the coastal zone, including Tokyo, Shanghai and others.

Comment by M. Rechkin:

Currently, the United States is trying to spark a new world war, in which it would like to be in the advantageous position of an outside observer. And who should fight and die on the battlefield? In 1958 , the German clairvoyant Erich Weiss predicted: “In the 21st century, Russia and Germany will have a common destiny, and, of course, they will want to quarrel again. The woman (Angela Merkel - ?!) who will rule our country and the man in the Kremlin will do everything to prevent a new war from starting. If they don’t do this, by 2030, neither Russia nor us will exist.” To this we can add that Erich Weiss died in 1998.

According to Nostradamus, “a wave of unexpected natural disasters will begin, destroying everything in its path. At the beginning of 2019, a huge hurricane will begin that will engulf almost the entire territory of the United States, and later the world center will be moved to Siberia.”

From Edgar Cayce’s prophecies about Russia: “A huge country in the Center of Eurasia will not suffer from the Great Cataclysm - millions of people will rush there for help and receive it.”
